Sequel (album)
''Sequel'' is the ninth studio album by the American singer-songwriter Harry Chapin, released in 1980 (see 1980 in music). It was the last complete album released during Harry's lifetime. A tenth studio album, '' The Last Protest Singer'', made up of material he was working on at the time of his death, was released about six years after he died. The title song "Sequel" reports further events in the lives of Harry and Sue, the characters in Chapin's hit song "Taxi", and peaked at 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (the original went to No. 24). A follow-up single, "Story of a Life", failed to reach the Hot 100 chart (peaking at No. 105), but is historic as it was Chapin's final 45. The album was later re-released under the title ''Remember When the Music'' with the addition of two previously unreleased tracks. Harry Chapin
Harold Forster Chapin (; December 7, 1942 – July 16, 1981) was an American singer-songwriter, philanthropist, and hunger activist best known for his folk rock and pop rock songs. He achieved worldwide success in the 1970s. Chapin, a Grammy Award-winning artist and Grammy Hall of Fame inductee, has sold over 16 million records worldwide. Chapin recorded a total of 11 albums from 1972 until his death in 1981. All 14 singles that he released became hits on at least one national music chart. As a dedicated humanitarian, Chapin fought to end world hunger. He was a key participant in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977. In 1987, Chapin was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his humanitarian work. John Wallace (musician)
"Big" John Wallace is a bassist and singer who became known as a backup for singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. Career Musician Wallace gained membership of Chapin's band by responding to an ad placed in the ''Village Voice'' in 1971. Other responders to the ad included cellist Tim Scott and guitarist Ron Palmer. When Harry Chapin and his brothers went on tour in 1971, Harry asked Wallace to continue with his backing band as bass guitarist and backup vocalist. John Wallace performed with Chapin for ten years, until Harry Chapin's death in 1981. In live concerts, Wallace would sing very high head tones on songs such as "Taxi". However, John displayed a remarkable vocal range, as he also sang the baritone parts in "Mr. Tanner" and "30,000 Pounds of Bananas". Joe Lala
Joseph Anthony Lala (November 3, 1947 – March 18, 2014) was an American musician and actor. In 1966, he co-founded the rock band Blues Image. Life and career Lala was born in Ybor City, Tampa, Florida, to parents from Contessa Entellina (an ethnic Albanian community in Sicily). His father was Sicilian, and he left the family when Joe was a child, so he was raised by his mother on her own. Lala's mother, Janie Cacciatore, an avid dancer, took her son to as many shows as she could. Lala spoke fluent Spanish and Italian. He started out playing the drums in several Florida bands, before forming the band Blues Image. He also occasionally sang lead vocals, most notably on the song "Leaving My Troubles Behind". The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. The song is the final single released from the album, and Chapin's final single before his death in July 1981. When released, it became a hit on the ''Billboard'' Bubbling Under Hot 100. Taxi (song)
"Taxi" is a song written by Harry Chapin, released as a single in early 1972 to coincide with the release of his album '' Heads & Tales''. It is an autobiographical ballad using first-person narrative to tell the story of a taxi cab driver meeting an old flame from his youth when he picks her up in his cab. Chapin debuted the song on NBC's ''The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson'', which prompted calls and telegrams from viewers requesting that Chapin return to the show. It was the first time in the show's history that host Johnny Carson brought a performer back the very next night for an encore performance.
