Septimus Kaikai
Septimus Kaikai (born in Kailahun, Kailahun District) is a retired Sierra Leonean politician and academic. He served as Presidential spokesman between 1997 and 2002, and as Minister of Information and communications (Sierra Leone), Minister of Information and Broadcasting from 2002 to 2007 in former president Ahmad Tejan Kabbah's second term in office. Kaikai is a member of the Mende people, Mende ethnic group and a native of Kailahun District in Eastern Sierra Leone. In 2010, Kaikai was appointed as the first chairman of the board of trustees for Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) by President Ernest Bai Koroma. Kaikai studied at Towson University. He taught business at Catonsville Community College as a tenured Economics professor before returning suddenly to Sierra Leone in 1998. He has a brother, Alpha Y. Kailahun is the capital of Kailahun District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. Kailahun is a major business and commercial center of Kailahun District. The population was 13,108 in the 2004 census, a 2006 estimate of 18,41and a current estimate of about 30,411. Kailahun District is a district in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. Its capital city, capital and largest city is the town of Kailahun. The second most populous city in the district is Segbwema. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah
Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah (February 16, 1932 – March 13, 2014) was a Sierra Leonean politician who served twice as the 3rd President of Sierra Leone, from 1996 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 2007. An economist and attorney by profession, Kabbah spent many years working for the United Nations Development Programme. He retired from the United Nations and returned to Sierra Leone in 1992. In early 1996, Kabbah was elected leader of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) and was the party's presidential candidate in the country's first free presidential election later that year. He was elected with 59% of the vote, defeating his closest rival, John Karefa-Smart of the United National People's Party (UNPP), who had 40% in the runoff vote and conceded defeat. Mende People
The Mende are one of the two largest ethnic groups in Sierra Leone; their neighbours, the Temne people, constitute the largest ethnic group at 35.5% of the total population, which is slightly larger than the Mende at 31.2%. The Mende are predominantly found in the Southern Province and the Eastern Province. The Mende are mostly farmers and hunters. The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) is the national radio and television broadcaster in Sierra Leone. It is owned by the government of Sierra Leone and is a branch of the Sierra Leone Ministry of Information and Communications. It is theoretically regulated by the Independent Media Commission (IMC). The SLBC primarily broadcasts the national television and regional radio service from its headquarters in the New England neighborhood of Freetown.
