Sepik FC, sometimes referred to as East Sepik FC, is a professional association football club based in Wewak, Papua New Guinea, founded in 2008 shortly before the start of the 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season. The side took part in just one National Soccer League season, finishing 7th out of eight teams, before failing to return the following season. The club's finest moment perhaps came on 22 November 2008, when they defeated Rapatona FC 1–0 away from home – Rapatona would go on to finish second in the championship later that season. The KPHL National Soccer League, also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League for sponsorship reasons, is the men's top division of professional soccer in Papua New Guinea. It is a nationwide league formed in 2006 by Papua New Guinea Football Association. It replaced the Papua New Guinea National Club Championship as the country's major soccer competition. In its 13 seasons, the competition has been won by only two clubs: Hekari United won the first eight editions, while Lae City have won the last six. The 2021 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, for sponsorship reasons also known as the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited National Soccer League, is the 15th edition of the Papua New Guinea National Soccer League, the top-tier football league in Papua New Guinea. Wewak
Wewak is the capital of the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea. It is on the northern coast of the island of New Guinea. It is the largest town between Madang and Jayapura. It is the see city (seat) of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wewak. History Between 1943 and 1945, in World War II, Wewak was the site of the largest Japanese airbase in mainland New Guinea. The base was subjected to repeated bombing by Australian and American forces, most notably in one massive attack on 17 August 1943. Directly to the west of the town centre is a peninsula known as Cape Wom, which was the site of the surrender of Japanese forces in New Guinea on 13 September 1945. 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League
The 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League season, known as the Telikom NSL Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the third edition of Papua New Guinea National Soccer League. The title was won by Hekari Souths United, who won their third consecutive title. The side were awarded the title after several postponements and the eventual cancellation of the Grand Final, by virtue of their superior regular season finish compared to Rapatona Tigers, who they were due to face in the final. Teams Eight teams entered the competition, an expansion of one from the previous season's seven. Previous season's runners-up Gelle Hills, and bottom two clubs Madang Fox and Besta Madang Fighters, all withdrew. Rapatona Football Club, formerly known as Inspac Rapatona FC, CMSS Rapatona Tigers FC, Moresby Casino Hotel and currently referred to as PKA Rapatona FC for sponsorship reasons, is a Papua New Guinea football club, based in Port Moresby and founded in 1982. The club entered the 2008–09 Papua New Guinea National Soccer League as the only Madang-based franchise, and finished in 8th place out of eight clubs, after winning just one game.
