Sendai International Music Competition
The Sendai International Music Competition is a triennial violin and piano music competition held in Sendai, Japan, presented in association with the Sendai International Music Competition Organizing Committee, City of Sendai and the Sendai Cultural Foundation. In the competition there is no overall winner, rather there are six winners each from the violin and piano categories, with the first-placed winners receiving the highest prize. Although the competition is international, most award-winners have been from either Europe or Asia. The first award-winner from outside those continents was American Sean Kennard, who finished fifth in the 2004 competition's piano category. Bruce Xiaoyu Liu
Bruce Liu (born Xiaoyu Liu on May 8, 1997) is a Canadian pianist. Born in Paris and raised in Montreal, he began to play the piano at eight years old and was performing by the age of eleven. In 2021, he rose to widespread renown after winning the XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition. Early life and education Liu was born in Paris to Chinese parents from Beijing. When he was six, he moved to Montreal with his father. He initially started piano studies on an electric keyboard but progressed to an upright once he became more serious. He graduated from the Montreal Conservatory of Music in the piano class of Richard Raymond. He has since been studying with Đặng Thái Sơn at the Université de Montréal. Sunwoo Yekwon
Yekwon Sunwoo ( ko, 선우예권; born February 10, 1989, in Anyang) is a South Korean classical pianist. In 2017, at 28 years old, Sunwoo was the first Korean to win the gold medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He won the Sendai International Music Competition in 2013. Background Sunwoo was born in Anyang, South Korea in 1989. He began studying piano at the age of 8, drawn to the instrument from hearing his two older sisters play. By 2004 at the age of 15, he had given both his recital and orchestra debuts in Seoul. Sunwoo attended Seoul Arts High School in South Korea. While living in Korea, Sunwoo studied with Min-ja Shin and Sun-wha Kim. Marianna Prjevalskaya (born 1982 in Chişinău) is a Russian concert pianist and a naturalized Spanish citizen, having settled in A Coruña in 1992. Education Born to a musical family, Prjevalskaya benefited from early lessons with her mother, Tatianna, her principal mentor for more than eleven years, from age six. She continued her studies at the Royal College of Music in London with Irina Zaritskaya and Kevin Kenner. Giora Schmidt (pronounced ghee-OH-rah) is an American/Israeli violinist. Biography Giora Schmidt was born into a family of musicians in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents emigrated from Israel in 1978, and played with the Philadelphia Opera Company Orchestra. His mother, Michal Schmidt is a cellist and pianist and is on the faculty of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges and the University of Pennsylvania. His father, Dov Schmidt, is a violinist and businessman. Schmidt began his violin studies at the age of four, and by 12 was commuting between Philadelphia and New York to study with Patinka Kopec and Pinchas Zukerman at the Manhattan School of Music. Vyacheslav Gryaznov (russian: Вячеслав Грязнов; born 15 January 1982) is a Russian classical pianist, recording artist, transcriber, composer, and assistant professor of piano. In 2006, he studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Yuri Slesarev and post-graduate studies in 2009. Since 2008, he has held the position of teaching assistant in the Piano Department of the Moscow Conservatory. Beginning with the 2008/2009 concert season, V. Colleen Lee Ka-ling (; born 11 October 1980) is a Hong Kong pianist who won the 6th place prize in the XV International Chopin Piano Competition in 2005. Biography Lee began piano lessons when she was four, and started studying with Miss Eleanor Wong upon admission to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts two years later. She graduated valedictorian in 2001 (Bachelor’s) and again in 2003 (Professional Diploma), and has since been working with Arie Vardi at the Hochschule in Hannover, Germany.
