Semley Railway Station
Semley was a railway station in Wiltshire, England. It was served by trains on the West of England Main Line and was the railhead for the town of Shaftesbury, Dorset, to the south. Although several plans were made to give Shaftesbury its own station, the town's position on a hill prevented this. The nearest station to Shaftesbury is now Gillingham. History The station was opened on 2 May 1859 by the Salisbury and Yeovil Railway, which became part of the London and South Western Railway in 1878. In the 1923 grouping the L&SWR became part of the Southern Railway, but in the 1948 nationalisation it was transferred to British Railways Southern Region and in 1963 to BR Western Region. BR withdrew local passenger trains and closed the station on 7 March 1966. Semley
Semley is a village in Sedgehill and Semley civil parish in Wiltshire, England, about north-east of Shaftesbury in neighbouring Dorset. The hamlet of Sem Hill lies about a quarter of a mile west of the village. The River Sem, from which the village takes its name, forms part of the northern boundary of the parish. History In AD 955 King Eadwig granted land to Wilton Abbey, and Semley was probably part of that estate. In the 1530s. under Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries, the Abbey had to surrender its lands to the Crown, including the manor of Semley. In 1541 Henry VIII granted Semley to Sir Edward Bayntun and his wife Lady Isabel as part of his policy of re-allocated monastic land to his nobles. In 1572 in Queen Elizabeth's reign, Bayntun's son Francis restored Semley to the Crown, and later that year Elizabeth I granted Semley to Matthew Arundell of Wardour Castle, who was knighted in 1574. The Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RCTS) is a national society founded in Cheltenham, England in 1928 to bring together those interested in rail transport and locomotives. Warminster
Warminster () is an ancient market town with a nearby garrison, and civil parish in south west Wiltshire, England, on the western edge of Salisbury Plain. The parish had a population of about 17,000 in 2011. The 11th-century Minster Church of St Denys stands near the River Were, which runs through the town and can be seen running through the town park. A350 Road
The A350 is a north–south primary route in southern England, that runs from the M4 motorway in Wiltshire to Poole in Dorset. Route Starting at junction 17 of the M4 motorway north of Chippenham, the first three miles are a dual carriageway to the northern outskirts of Chippenham, where a partly light-controlled roundabout splits traffic between the bypass section and the road into the town centre. The Chippenham bypass is punctuated by six more roundabouts, the last being at the Lackham College. In so doing it crosses the A420 to Bristol and the A4 for Bath to the West and Calne to the East. It then goes past the small village of Lacock before reaching Melksham four miles later.
