Semisi Tapueluelu
Semisi Palu ‘Ifoni Tapueluelu (born October 28, 1949) more commonly known as Semisi Tapueluelu, is a Tongan politician. He is the father of Mateni Tapueluelu. After working as a prisons superintendent, he went into politics. His career in national politics began when he was elected People's Representative for the tenth constituency of Tongatapu in the November 2010 general election. Standing as a candidate for the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands, he obtained 26.6% of the vote, seeing off eleven other candidates. In July 2014 Tapueluelu was dumped as a Democratic Party candidate. He ran as an independent in the 2014 Tongan general election, but was not re-elected. Tongatapu 10
Tongatapu 10 is an electoral constituency for the Legislative Assembly in the Kingdom of Tonga. It was established for the November 2010 general election, when the multi-seat regional constituencies for People's Representatives were replaced by single-seat constituencies, electing one representative via the first past the post electoral system. Located on the country's main island, Tongatapu, it encompasses the villages of Lapaha, Talasiu, Hoi, Nukuleka, Makaunga, Talafo‘ou, Navutoka, Manuka, Kolonga, Afa, Niutoua, and ‘Eueiki. Its first ever representative was Semisi Tapueluelu, a first time MP, representing the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands. He lost the seat to Pōhiva Tuʻiʻonetoa at the 2014 election. The Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands ( to, Paati Temokalati ʻa e ʻOtu Motu ʻAngaʻofa) is a political party in Tonga. The party's leader at its foundation was 'Akilisi Pohiva. The party was launched in September 2010, and included several sitting People's Representatives who were part of the Human Rights and Democracy Movement. Its objectives upon foundation included government transparency and economic reform. The "Friendly Islands" are a name originally given to Tonga by Captain James Cook. 2010 elections The party contested all 17 people's seats in the 2010 elections, winning 12 of them. Mateni Tapueluelu is a Tongan journalist and politician. He has worked as a correspondent for Radio New Zealand International in Tonga, then became editor of the '' Keleʻa'', the newspaper of the pro-democracy movement and of the Democratic Party of the Friendly Islands, led by his father-in-law ʻAkilisi Pohiva. Tongatapu is the main island of Tonga and the site of its capital, Nukualofa. 2010 Tongan General Election
Early general elections under a new electoral law were held in Tonga on 25 November 2010. They determined the composition of the 2010 Tongan Legislative Assembly. The early elections were announced by the new King George Tupou V in July 2008 shortly before being crowned on 1 August 2008, and were preceded by a programme of constitutional reform. For the first time, a majority of the seats (17 out of 26) in the Tongan parliament were elected by universal suffrage, with the remaining nine seats being reserved for members of Tonga's nobility. The Royal Order of the Crown of Tonga ('' Tongan: Fakalangilangi 'o Kalauni 'o Tonga'') is an Order of Merit awarded for exceptional services to Tonga and the Crown of Tonga. History It was established 16 April 1913 by George Tupou II to reward those who distinguished themselves by exceptional services to the State and the Crown. The Order was in four classes, and the insignia were designed and manufactured in Germany. The first awards were made in August 1914, to the King, Queen ʻAnaseini Takipō and to F T Goedicke, the Chancellor of the Order.
