Semion Grossu (born 18 March 1934, Satul Nou) is a Moldovan politician and businessman. Biography Grossu was born on 18 March 1934 in the commune of Satu-Nou, Cetatea Albă County, Kingdom of Romania (nowadays Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Raion, Ukraine). In 1961, he joined the Communist Party of Moldavia. Grossu was the prime minister of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (1 August 1976 – 30 December 1980) and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Moldovan SSR (1 September 1976 – 31 December 1980). He later became First Secretary of the Communist Party of Moldavia (30 December 1981 – 16 November 1989). Semyon Fyodorovich Shchedrin (1745–1804) was a Russian landscape painter, the uncle and mentor of Sylvester Shchedrin. Member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Biography He was born in St. Petersburg into the family of a life guard. In 1759, he entered the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, and in 1765 graduated with a gold medal and grants to study abroad. Shchedrin ventured to Paris, then to Rome. In Paris he studied the works of old and contemporary painters. Under the influence of Rousseau's idea that beauty exists not only in classic patterns of arts but also in everyday life and nature, Shchedrin worked much en plein-air, otherwise known as painting in outdoor environments. In Rome, however, he fell under the influence of classicism, the idea that art should reflect the works of antiquity and thus prolong their successes. Sesto Pals, pen name of Simion (or Semion) Șestopali (born Шестопаль, also rendered as ''S(h)estopal'', ''Sestopaly'', or ''Sestopali''; ca. 1912 – October 27, 2002), was a Russian-born Romanian and Israeli writer. Semyon Pavlovich Ivanov (russian: Семён Павлович Иванов; 13 September 1907 – 26 September 1993) was a Soviet general. Hero of the Soviet Union (1945). Biography Early life Ivanov was born to a peasants' family. He began working in railroad maintenance at the age of twelve, while continuing to study during his spare time. He volunteered for the Red Army in 1926 and was sent to the 1st Infantry School in Moscow. After he graduated in 1929, he was given command of a platoon in the 16th Infantry Division. He joined the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) in the same year. In 1936, Ivanov was sent to the Frunze Military Academy. Semyon Abramovich Furman (December 1, 1920 – March 17, 1978) was a Soviet chess player and trainer of Belarussian Jewish origin. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 1966. Furman is best known for developing Anatoly Karpov into a World Chess Champion, but was a formidable player himself, as well as a successful coach for several other world-class players. Semyon Zinovyevich Alapin (russian: Семён Зиновьевич Алапин; – 15 July 1923) was a Russian chess player, openings analyst, and puzzle composer. He was also a linguist, railway engineer and a grain commodities merchant. Biography Born in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire, into a Jewish family on , nephew of the Jewish memoirist Pauline Wengeroff.
