Semiahmoo Bay
Semiahmoo Bay ( ) is the southeastern section of Boundary Bay on the Pacific coast of North America. The bay is named for the Semiahmoo First Nation, who originally occupied the area. The Semiahmoo Peninsula borders the bay and was home to cannery operations. It is now home to the Semiahmoo Golf Resort. Semiahmoo People
The Semiahmoo ( , ; Semiahmoo: ''SEMYOME'') are a Coast Salish peoples, Coast Salish Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, indigenous people whose homeland is in the Lower Mainland region of southwestern British Columbia, Canada. History The Semiahmoo are more closely related to the Lummi and Samish peoples south of the international border, and to the Songhees, Lekwammen and T'sou-ke peoples across the Strait of Georgia, than they are to the Halkomelem-speaking Sto:lo of the Fraser Valley and of the Fraser's delta to the north of themselves, the Musqueam. Semiahmoo First Nation
Semiahmoo First Nation ( ) is the band government of the Semiahmoo people, a Coast Salish subgroup. The band's main community and offices are located on the Semiahmoo Indian Reserve which is sandwiched between the boundary of White Rock, British Columbia and the Canada–United States boundary and Peace Arch Provincial Park. History Demographics In 1790, Europeans estimated the Semiahmoo population at 300. By 1854, the band's numbers were reduced to 250 due to smallpox and warfare. In 1909 there were 38 band members in British Columbia. In 1963, the number had reached 28 and then just 25 by 1971. Between 1996 and 2001, the reserve population dropped 34.5 per cent, from 200 people to 131, and currently they have 98 registered members and 53 members who live on site The Semiahmoo remain one of the smallest First Nations in the region with about 74 band members, of whom 40 live on Reserve. Semiahmoo Indian Reserve
The Semiahmoo Indian Reserve ( ) is a 129.1-hectare Indian reserve in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia, located on Semiahmoo Bay between the City of White Rock and Peace Arch Park, which sits astride the international boundary with Washington state. The reserve is under the administration of the Semiahmoo First Nation, which is the band government of the Semiahmoo people, a North Straits Salish-speaking subgroup of the Coast Salish. Semiahmoo Peninsula
Semiahmoo Spit is a spit that protrudes from the westernmost expanse of shore on Semiahmoo Peninsula between Semiahmoo Bay and Drayton Harbor off the coast of Blaine in Whatcom County, Washington state. The spit is home to Semiahmoo Park Geomorphology and geography It is oriented toward the northeast, which means the direction of longshore drift, a constructive geomorphologic process, is northeasterly. Longshore drift through the Strait of Georgia, therefore, tends to be northeasterly. Because waves are mainly powered by wind, the waves approaching Semiahmoo hit the shore obliquely, at an angle of approximately 30 to 45 degrees to the northeast, and thus the prevailing wind through the Strait of Georgia must also be northeasterly. Because of longshore drift, sediments are picked up from the headland and deposited according to size and based on wave energy. Semiahmoo Secondary School
Semiahmoo Secondary School ( ) is a public high school in South Surrey, British Columbia, and is part of School District 36 Surrey. Founded in 1940 as the first senior secondary school in South Surrey, Semiahmoo spans grades eight through twelve. The school currently has a student population of around 1700 and a faculty of 96, and is headed by Bal Ranu. Semiahmoo is one of four public high schools on the peninsula, along with Earl Marriott Secondary School, Elgin Park Secondary School and Grandview Heights Secondary School. Semiahmoo Shopping Centre
Semiahmoo Shopping Centre ( ) is an indoor shopping mall on the Semiahmoo peninsula in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Opened in 1980, the shopping centre is named after the nearby Semiahmoo Bay and is currently anchored by Save-On-Foods and Winners. History The mall opened with a Kmart discount department store as an anchor tenant featuring an Automotive Centre and a Kmart Cafeteria. Kmart closed this location in 1998. In 2013, the mall featured one of only three remaining Zellers-branded department stores still operating in the country, with plans for the brand to continue as a crossover with Hudson's Bay. In June 2014, First Capital announced that the Zellers store would close and be replaced by another retailer. It was confirmed on May 15, 2019, that a Winners store would be replacing the former Zellers. Semiahmoo Resort
Semiahmoo Resort is a golfing resort and spa overlooking Semiahmoo Bay, opposite Blaine, Washington, northwest of Bellingham in the northwestern coast of the United States. Set within , it lies on a long sandy spit in the northern part of Puget Sound near the Canada–US border. The name of the resort is from the Semiahmoo indigenous people in whose Salish language it is the word for "half moon" and describes the crescent shaped land the resort was built on.
