Selskar Gunn
Selskar Michael Gunn (25 May 1883 – 2 August 1944) was a public health expert who was a vice-president of the Rockefeller Foundation for many years. He is known for the foundation's innovative program in China that combined improvements to agriculture, education and medicine in rural areas. Early years (1883–1917) Gunn's father was Michael Gunn (1840–1901), who had managed the Opera Bouffe Company tour for Richard D'Oyly Carte, and was the manager of the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. His mother was Barbara Elizabeth Johnstone, who performed in burlesque and opéra bouffe under the stage name Bessie Sudlow. Selskar Michael Gunn was born in London, England on 25 May 1883. In 1900 Gunn went to the United States to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was a pupil of William Thompson Sedgwick at MIT. Dingxian
Dingzhou, or Tingchow in Postal Map Romanization, and formerly called Ding County or Dingxian, is a county-level city in the prefecture-level city of Baoding, Hebei Province. As of 2009, Dingzhou had a population of 1.2 million. Dingzhou has 3 subdistricts, 13 towns, 8 townships, and 1 ethnic township. Dingzhou is about halfway between Baoding and Shijiazhuang, southwest of Beijing, and northeast of Shijiazhuang. History Dingzhou was originally known as Lunu in early imperial China. Vera Bock
Vera Bock (4 April 1905 – 2006) was a Russian Empire-born artist who spent most of her career in the United States. She is known for her book illustrations and for the posters she made for the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. Life Vera Bock was born in Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire on 4 April 1905. Her father was an American banker and her mother was a Russian concert pianist. During the Russian Revolution her family fled to the United States by way of Siberia, China and Japan. They reached San Francisco in 1917. Bock later studied in Switzerland and England. She was trained in painting and drawing, and spent a year in England studying woodcutting, manuscript illumination, printing and photogravure. Bock may be best known for her children’s book illustrations. United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) was an international relief agency, largely dominated by the United States but representing 44 nations. Founded in November 1943, it was dissolved in September 1948. it became part of the United Nations in 1945.
