Selman City is an unincorporated community in western Rusk County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 271 in 2000. It is located within the Longview, Texas metropolitan area. History S.A. Selman discovered oil on his property in the 1930s, making Selman City an oilfield-dominant community. Raymond A. Crawford served as the first postmaster in 1939. The post office also served Turnertown and Joinerville. Its peak population was 450 in 1947-48 with 7 businesses, then declined to 271 from 1980 through 2000 with two new businesses. New London, Texas
New London is a city in Rusk County, Texas, United States. The population was 958 at the 2020 census. New London was originally known as just "London". Because Kimble County Texas had already established a US Post Office station named London, the town changed its name to "New London" in 1931. History On March 18, 1937, the London School Explosion killed 294 people (most were children). As a result of the disaster, Texas passed laws requiring natural gas to be mixed with a malodorant to provide early warning of any leak. Other states quickly followed. Texas State Highway 42
State Highway 42 (SH 42) is a state highway located in the northeastern portion of the Texas in Gregg and Rusk Counties. This route was designated on December 12, 1962, over former SH 259 because of the creation of US 259 (which replaced cancelled SH 26) through Kilgore, which it intersected. Previous routes SH 42 was originally proposed on April 22, 1919, as a route from Greenville to Marshall. On August 21, 1923, the northwest terminus extended north to Sherman, replacing a section of SH 11. The section of SH 42 from Alba to Marshall was cancelled; SH 42 was instead rerouted to end in Mineola. On January 21, 1924, the section from Alba to Mineola was cancelled. Joinerville, Texas
Joinerville is an unincorporated community in East Texas. It is located in western Rusk County, Texas, United States. Joinerville is seven miles west of the city of Henderson, Texas. It was originally called Cyril, and then Miller or Miller Schoolhouse for either Andrew or John Cherry Miller. The latter owned seven enslaved persons and donated of land for the Juan Ximenes Survey before the American Civil War. The community is also located near the site of a former Cherokee Indian village. In 1930, the name was officially changed to "Joinerville", in honor of Columbus Marion Joiner, the wildcatter who discovered the East Texas Oil Field. The dirt road to the discovery well, Daisy Bradford No. 3, intersected the Henderson-Tyler highway at Joinerville. Turnertown, Texas
Turnertown is an unincorporated community in Rusk County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 76 in 2000. It is located within the Longview, Texas metropolitan area. History Turnertown developed from another community further east, when it moved here after the roads were built. The East Texas Oil Field caused it to become a boomtown in 1930. Horace and Boger Turner, Sr., were given land grants to plat it. Its population was 1,500 with 25 businesses in 1936, a number which plummeted to 350 in the early 1940s, and up to the 1950s, it had three churches and a wide array of stores, oilfield supply houses, and machine shops. The population further declined to 150 in the mid-1960s, and by the end of that decade, it further declined to 76, where it remained through 2000.
