Selma, Oregon
Selma is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Josephine County, Oregon, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 695. It is located in the ZIP code of 97538. Geography Selma is just southwest of the center of Josephine County, in the valley of Deer Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the Illinois River and part of the Rogue River watershed. U.S. Route 199 passes through the center of town, leading south to Cave Junction and northeast to Grants Pass, the county seat. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Selma CDP has an area of , all of it recorded as land. Demographics Notable residents Actor John Wayne used to visit the Deer Creek Ranch one mile west of Selma; it is now the Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education. Selma is a rock ballad recorded in former Yugoslavia by the influential Bosnian rock band Bijelo Dugme. This song appeared for the first time on their 1974 debut album ''Kad bi bio bijelo dugme''. Background "Selma" is a song about a young girl traveling to university. The narrator is saying goodbye to her, and he cannot express his feelings for her, all he can say is goodbye and please do not lean out of the train window. The text of the song was written by Vlado Dijak, a former Yugoslav poet and songwriter, based on a real event in 1949, when he accompanied Selma Borić, the young Zenica-born girl in which he was secretly in love with, to the train station in Sarajevo. It is based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches initiated and directed by James Bevel and led by Martin Luther King Jr., Hosea Williams, and John Lewis. Selma is a historic property and former plantation in Loudoun County, Virginia, near Leesburg. Selma is best known as the residence of Armistead Thomson Mason (4 August 1787–6 February 1819), a U.S. Senator from Virginia from 1816 through 1817. History The lands of Selma were once a part of the Northern Neck Proprietary owned by Lord Fairfax, and Selma was a part of the tract bought around 1741 by Stevens Thomson Mason. Selma was built at the base of Catoctin Mountain overlooking a sweeping vista of lawn and pastureland between 1800 and 1810 by Armistead Thomson Mason. Mason came to be known as the "Chief of Selma." Due to a political quarrel between Mason and his cousin Colonel John Mason McCarty, he and McCarty dueled at the Bladensburg dueling grounds in Bladensburg on 6 February 1819. Selma Union Depot
Selma Union Depot, also known as Selma Union Station, is a train station and museum in Selma, North Carolina. Built in 1924, it is currently served by two Amtrak passenger trains, the '' Palmetto'' and the '' Carolinian.'' It is located at 500 East Railroad Street in the heart of downtown Selma. The ''Silver Meteor'' and the ''Silver Star'' have their northern split here, but do not stop in Selma. The station appears in Amtrak timetables as Selma- Smithfield. History The original station in the area was the Mitchner station, built in 1855 a few blocks from the current station.
