Selim Islami
Selim Islami (March 18, 1923 – October 26, 2001) was an Albanian archaeologist and historian from Sarandë who contributed to the development of Illyrian studies. Biography Selim Islami was born in Pandalejmon, Sarandë District, Albania. He completed his primary education in Saranda and secondary education in Elbasan. In 1951 he graduated from the Moscow University and returned to Albania, where he worked for around forty years at the Albanian Academy of Sciences as an archaeologist. He was the director of the Archaeological Museum in Tirana, for over ten years he headed its archaeological department. He was also vice-dean of the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of Tirana. In 1973 he was awarded the title of professor. Sarandë
Sarandë (; sq-definite, Saranda; el, Άγιοι Σαράντα, Ágioi Saránta) is a city in the Republic of Albania and seat of Sarandë Municipality. Geographically, the city is located on an open sea gulf of the Ionian Sea within the Mediterranean Sea. Stretching along the Albanian Ionian Sea Coast, Saranda has a Mediterranean climate with over 300 sunny days a year. Sarandë is known for its blue deep waters of the Mediterranean. Near Sarandë are the remains of the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site. In recent years, Saranda has seen a steady increase in tourists, many of them coming by cruise ship. Visitors are attracted by the natural environment of Saranda and its archaeological sites. Sarandë is inhabited by a majority of ethnic Albanians, and also has a minority Greek community and as such it has been considered one of the two centers of the Greek minority in Albania. Illyrology
Illyrology or Illyrian studies is interdisciplinary academic field which focuses on scientific study of Illyria and Illyrians as a regional and thematic branch of the larger disciplines of ancient history and archaeology. A practitioner of the discipline is called ''Illyrologist.'' His duty is to investigate the range of ancient Illyrian history, culture, art, language, heraldry, numizmatic, mythology, economics, ethics, etc. from c. 1000 BC up to the end of Roman rule around the 5th century. Tiranë
Tirana ( , ; aln, Tirona) is the capital and largest city of Albania. Sarandë District
Sarandë District ( sq, Rrethi i Sarandës) was one of the 36 districts of Albania, which were dissolved in July 2000 and replaced by 12 newly created counties. It had a population of 35,235 in 2001, and an area of . The centre of the district was the city of Sarandë. Other places included Konispol (at the border with Greece), Ksamil (a resort), Çukë, Vrinë and Butrint (an archeological site). Its territory is now part of Vlorë County: the municipalities of Sarandë, Konispol, Finiq (partly) and Himara (partly). Alongside ethnic Albanians, there is a considerable ethnic Greek minority. Skënder Anamali
Skënder Anamali (5 May 1921, Shkodër – 21 April 1996, Tirana) was one of the founders of Albanian archaeology. He made significant contributions to the field of Illyrian studies. Biography Skënder Anamali was born and raised in Shkodra. After completing high school in his hometown, Anamali continued his studies at the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Padua in Italy, gaining knowledge in the field of antiquity. On returning to Albania after his studies, he began a career as an archaeologist at the Institute of Sciences in Tirana. Together with his colleague Hasan Ceka, he opened the first Archaeological museum in Tirana in 1948. Anamali became known for his excavations in the city of Amantia, Apollonia, Epidamnos ( Durres), and many other places. The Academy of Albanological Studies ( sq, Akademia e Studimeve Albanologjike) is the main institution of albanology in Albania. History The Academy of Albanological Studies started as part of the reconstruction and modernization of the Albanian academical and university system. The decision was taken by the Albanian Government in August 2007. It derived from joining the four existing institutions: Institute of Archaeology, Institute of Linguistics and Literature, Institute of History, and Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Art Studies, with two research units: Art Studies and Albanian Encyclopedia which used to belong Albanian Academy of Sciences.
