Anna Seghers
Anna Seghers (; born ''Anna Reiling,'' 19 November 1900 – 1 June 1983), is the pseudonym of a German writer notable for exploring and depicting the moral experience of the Second World War. Born into a Jewish family and married to a Hungarian Communist, Seghers escaped Nazi-controlled territory through wartime France. She was granted a visa and gained ship's passage to Mexico, where she lived in Mexico City (1941–47). She returned to Europe after the war, living in West Berlin (1947–50), which was occupied by Allied forces. She eventually settled in the German Democratic Republic, where she worked on cultural and peace issues. She received numerous awards and in 1967 was nominated for the Nobel Prize by the GDR. She died and was buried in Berlin in 1983. She is believed to have based her pseudonym, Anna Seghers, on the surname of the Dutch painter and printmaker Hercules Pieterszoon Seghers or Segers (c. 1589 – c. 1638). Hercules Pieterszoon Seghers or Segers ( 1589 – 1638) was a Dutch painter and printmaker of the Dutch Golden Age. Charles John Seghers (also written as ''Charles-Jean Seghers''; 26 December 1839 – 28 November 1886) was a Belgian clergyman and missionary bishop. He is considered to be the founder of the Alaska Mission. Biography Early years and formation Seghers was born at Ghent, in Belgium. He attended school at the Jesuit High School of Ste. Barbe in Ghent, and the American College in Leuven. Ordained priest in May 1863 in Mechlin, Belgium, he left soon after to begin his missionary work in the area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in November of that year. Missionary work While there, he founded St. Joseph's Hospital in Victoria, British Columbia. He returned to Rome to take part in the First Vatican Council. He was appointed as a diocesan administrator in 1871, and later Bishop of Vancouver Island (now Bishop of Victoria) on 29 June 1873. Pierre Seghers (5 January 1906, in Paris – 4 November 1987, in Créteil) was a French poet and editor. During the Second World War he took part in the French Resistance movement. Career He founded, among other things, the famous line of books ''Poètes d’aujourd’hui'' (''Contemporary poets'') in 1944, which published 270 books of poets both famous and unknown (such as an anthology of modern accursed poets in 1972, '' Poètes maudits d'aujourd'hui: 1946-1970''). Together with François Lachenal, Paul Eluard and Jean Lescure, he gathered in 1943, the texts of many poets of the French Resistance, which he published in Les Editions de Minuit under the title: ''L’honneur des poètes''. Emilius Seghers (1855–1927) was the 25th bishop of Ghent in Belgium. Life Seghers was born in Ghent on 3 September 1855, the son of a lawyer. He studied at the Jesuit secondary school in Ghent and the minor seminary. Carroll Seghers II (May 28, 1924 – April 17, 2004) was an American photographer, who as a leading member of the creative photo revolution in the 1960s and 1970s, helped produce advertising for brands like Texaco, Marlboro, American Express, Chrysler, United Airlines, Coca-Cola and Kodak, among many others. Seghers spent almost four decades in advertising, winning several Clio Awards, as well as being a featured contributor to Life Magazine. Selected works are also included in the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
