See See The Sun
''See See the Sun'' is the first album by the Dutch progressive rock band Kayak. It was originally released by Harvest Records in 1973 and reissued by Pseudonym with two bonus tracks (both of which were originally singles b-sides) in 1995, and again in 2012. The song 'Mammoth' is one of the very few pop singles to feature a barrel organ (or street organ). The organ, The Flamingo, was too big to get through the studio entrance. Therefore, the melody was recorded outside. Being a manually operated organ, the pace varied all the time, making it very hard to fit the piece into the rest of the song. Kayak (band)
Kayak is a Dutch rock band formed by Ton Scherpenzeel and Pim Koopman in Hilversum in 1972. In 1973, their debut album '' See See the Sun'' was released, including three hit singles. Their popularity was mainly in the Netherlands, with their top hit "Ruthless Queen" reaching No. 6 on the Dutch charts in March 1979. They disbanded in 1982 after releasing nine albums. In 1999, the band was asked to perform on the TV show ''De Vrienden van Amstel Live''. After this performance, they decided to reform, and released nine further studio albums and three live albums. History Co-founder Ton Scherpenzeel is the only member who has played on every Kayak album. Apart from keyboards, he also plays accordion, occasional bass guitar (for instance on the entire ''Nostradamus'' album) and double bass. Harvest Records is a British-American record label belonging to Capitol Music Group, originally created by EMI in 1969. History Harvest Records was created by EMI in 1969 to market progressive rock music, and to compete with Philips' Vertigo and Decca's Deram labels, and the independent Island label. Harvest was initially under the direction of Malcolm Jones, and was distributed in North America by EMI's US affiliate, Capitol Records. They were the European licensee for the American label Blue Thumb Records from 1969 to 1971. In the 1970s, the label primarily released progressive rock recordings by British acts including Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, The Move, Roy Wood, Barclay James Harvest, Be Bop Deluxe and Deep Purple. ''Kayak'' is the second album by the Dutch progressive rock band Kayak. It was originally released in 1974 and reissued by Pseudonym with a bonus track in 1995. At first, the title was to be "His Master's Noise". But the band expected problems with the record label "His Master's Voice" (HMV), and so they chose simply ''Kayak''. The album is also known as ''Kayak (2nd Album)''. The song "Wintertime" was the only single release from this album. "Serenades" was the b-side for the single "We Are Not Amused". A street organ (french: orgue de rue or ''orgue de barbarie''; german: Straßenorgel) played by an organ grinder is a French-German automatic mechanical pneumatic organ designed to be mobile enough to play its music in the street. The two most commonly seen types are the smaller German and the larger Dutch street organ. History The first descriptions of the street organ, at that time always a barrel organ owing to its use of a pinned cylinder (barrel) to operate levers and play notes, can be found in literature as early as the late 18th century. Max Werner
Max Werner (born 29 December 1953 in Hilversum) is a Dutch vocalist, musician, and drummer. He was the lead singer, drummer, and percussionist of the progressive art rock band Kayak. In 1972, Werner co-founded the band along with keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel, guitarist Johan Slager, and drummer Pim Koopman. He sang lead vocals (and played mellotron) on Kayak's first five albums. He later switched to drums until the band split up in 1982. In 1999, he returned as singer for the Kayak album ''Close to the Fire''. After a short tour in 2000, he had to leave again due to health problems. Werner also recorded four solo albums. In May 1981, he scored a hit single with "Rain in May", which peaked at No. 6 in the Netherlands and was a huge success in certain other European countries as well. Johan Slager
Johan Slager (born 8 June 1946, Amsterdam) is a Dutch musician best known as the original guitarist of rock band Kayak. He co-founded the band along with Ton Scherpenzeel, Pim Koopman, and Max Werner in 1972. He left the band in 1982 after nine albums, and returned briefly for a couple of performances in the 1990s. When Kayak reunited in 1999, Johan was replaced by Rob Winter. During and after his time with Kayak, Slager played with many Dutch artists; he played on albums by Circus Custers, Bolland & Bolland and Ekseption, and formed his own band called Plus Doreen. His guitar sounds can also be heard on albums by his ex-Kayak mates Max Werner and Edward Reekers. In recent years, he has joined singer Michel van Dijk (Alquin). Ton Scherpenzeel (born 6 August 1952) is a Dutch keyboardist, composer, lyricist, and founding member of progressive rock band Kayak, together with Pim Koopman and Max Werner whom he met whilst at the Hilversum Muziek Lyceum (Hilversum College of Music). Scherpenzeel is the only Kayak member who has played on every Kayak album. Apart from composing the music, writing lyrics, and playing keyboards, he also plays accordion, occasional bass guitar ''(for instance on the entire Nostradamus album)'' and double bass. He also provides backing vocals and sings lead vocals on the song "Love's Aglow" on the original Merlin album. In 2021, Kayak released their 18th studio album, '''Out of This World'.'' Cornelis Hubertus Johannes (Cees) van Leeuwen (born 1951) is a Dutch former member of parliament for the Pim Fortuyn List (LPF) from 2002 to 2003.
