Second Kidston Ministry
The Second Kidston Ministry was the 25th ministry of the Government of Queensland and was led by Premier William Kidston. It succeeded the Second Philp Ministry on 18 February 1908, 13 days after the 1908 state election. The ministry was followed by the Denham Ministry on 7 February 1911 following Kidston's retirement from politics. The Ministry
In constitutional usage in Commonwealth realms, a ministry (usually preceded by the definite article, i.e., the ministry) is a collective body of government ministers led by a head of government, such as a prime minister. It is described by Oxford Dictionaries as "a period of government under one prime minister". Although the term "cabinet" can in some circumstances be a synonym, a ministry can be a broader concept which might include office-holders who do not participate in cabinet meetings. Other titles can include "administration" (in the United States) or "government" (in common usage among most parliamentary systems) to describe similar collectives. The term is primarily used to describe the successive governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, which share a common political heritage. Digby Denham
Digby Frank Denham (25 January 1859 – 10 May 1944) was a politician and businessman in Queensland, Australia. He was a Premier of Queensland and Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. He was the first of only two Queensland Premiers to lose their own seat at a general election. Early life Denham was born in Langport, Somerset, England on 25 January 1859 to William Denham, a baker, and his wife Edna Grace, née Cooke. He studied at Langport Grammar School before being indentured to a drapery firm in July 1873. In 1881 Denham migrated to South Australia where he formed a business partnership in Mallala with a commercial traveller, George Cable Knight. He married Knight's sister Alice Maud at North Adelaide on 16 April 1884: they were to have two daughters and a son. Denham moved to Sydney in 1885 to form a partnership in John Melliday & Co. George Kerr (Australian Politician)
George Kerr (1853–1930) was an Australian politician, grazier, and blacksmith. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Kerr was born on 7 February 1853 at Beadnell, Northumberland, England and after training to become a blacksmith moved to Queensland in 1877. He became a mining speculator on the Croydon goldfields and then set up his own forge in Tambo, Queensland to service mining operations in the local region. Politics Kerr became involved in local politics for the Labor, and in 1893 he was elected to represent the electoral district of Barcoo in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland and served in that post until 1909. He rose to senior positions within the party, culminating in his election as leader of the Queensland Parliamentary Labor Party in 1904 after the death of his predecessor William Browne. Arthur George Clarence Hawthorn (31 October 1859 – 6 May 1934) was a solicitor, and member of both the Queensland Legislative Council and Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Hawthorn was born in October 1859 at Hobart Town, Tasmania, to George Hawthorn, shipmaster, and his wife Isabella Marie Louise (née Steele). Educated at Hobart High School, he was articled to three separate firms before being admitted as a solicitor in 1884 and immediately received an offer from Brisbane solicitor, Thomas Macdonald-Paterson to join him as a partner in the firm Macdonald-Patterson, Fitzgerald & Hawthorn. Thomas O'Sullivan
Thomas O'Sullivan QC (13 December 1856 – 22 February 1953) was a barrister, Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland, and member of both the Queensland Legislative Council and Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early years O'Sullivan was born at Ipswich, Queensland, to Patrick O'Sullivan, himself a future member of the Queensland Parliament, and his wife, Mary (née Real). He was educated at the local state school and at St. Mary's College, Ipswich. In 1873, O'Sullivan began his legal career in Ipswich, being employed by, and later articled to, Charles Frederick Chubb, Solicitor. Two years later he moved to Brisbane, being articled to Robert Little, but returned to Ipswich to look after his brother's legal business after his death in 1877. Peter Airey (9 January 1865 – 10 August 1950) was a Treasurer of Queensland, a member of the Queensland Legislative Council, and a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Airey was also known as a poet and as a short story writer, publishing a number of pieces in various periodicals from 1888.
