Second Chance Month
Second Chance Month, observed in the United States during April since 2017, is a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the collateral consequences of a criminal conviction, and unlock second-chance opportunities for people who have completed their sentences to become contributing citizens. The awareness effort is led by Prison Fellowship, the nation's largest nonprofit serving prisoners, former prisoners, and their families, and an advocate for justice reform. History and purpose In the United States, one in three American adults has a criminal record, which limits their access to education, jobs, housing, and other things necessary for a productive life. Even after they have completed their sentences and have been released from prison, these men and women face more than 48,000 documented legal restrictions in addition to widespread social stigma. Raise Awareness
Consciousness raising (also called awareness raising) is a form of activism popularized by United States feminists in the late 1960s. It often takes the form of a group of people attempting to focus the attention of a wider group on some cause or condition. Common issues include diseases (e.g. breast cancer, AIDS), conflicts (e.g. the Darfur genocide, global warming), movements (e.g. Greenpeace, PETA, Earth Hour) and political parties or politicians. Since informing the populace of a public concern is often regarded as the first step to changing how the institutions handle it, raising awareness is often the first activity in which any advocacy group engages. However, in practice, raising awareness is often combined with other activities, such as fundraising, membership drives or advocacy, in order to harness and/or sustain the motivation of new supporters which may be at its highest just after they have learned and digested the new information. Christopher B. Coleman (born September 1, 1961) is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 54th Mayor of Saint Paul, Minnesota between 2006 and 2018. He defeated incumbent mayor Randy Kelly in 2005 and took office on January 3, 2006. He was later succeeded by city councilman Melvin Carter on January 2, 2018. Gary Charles Peters Sr. (born December 1, 1958) is an American lawyer, politician, and former military officer serving as the junior United States senator from Michigan since 2015. Minnesota Correctional Facility – Stillwater
The Minnesota Correction Facility – Stillwater (MCF-STW) is a close custody (level 4) state prison for men in Bayport, Minnesota, United States. Built 1910–1914, it houses 1,600 inmates in seven different living areas. Additionally, approximately 100 inmates are housed in a nearby minimum security area. It replaced the original Minnesota Territorial Prison located just to the north in the city of Stillwater, Minnesota. Until recent expansion of the medium custody (level 3) Minnesota Correctional Facility – Faribault, MCF-STW was the state's largest facility by inmate population. Minnesota Correctional Facility – Shakopee
The Minnesota Correctional Facility – Shakopee (MCF-SHK) is a women-only state prison in Minnesota, USA. Constructed in 1986 and located in Shakopee, Scott County, it is Minnesota's only facility for housing female offenders. MCF-SHK is home to 500+ women of all five custody levels. The Facility consists of ten buildings, including six inmate living areas (including a chemical dependency treatment unit, parenting unit and education unit), a mental health unit and a segregation facility, an industries building, and administration and engineering related buildings. The prison previously had no perimeter fence or wall, only a hedge surrounding the property until 2016. This was after a bonding bill passed by the legislature of Minnesota in 2014 allowing for the erection of a twelve foot fence to surround the prison. Minnesota Correctional Facility – Lino Lakes
The Minnesota Correctional Facility – Lino Lakes (MCF-LL) is a state prison located in Lino Lakes, Minnesota, USA. The facility was original built in 1963 as a juvenile facility housing both boys and girls. In 1978 it was remodeled to become a medium security (Custody Level 3) facility for adult male inmates. The original juvenile cottages formed the basis of a "campus style" prison with more than a dozen one or two-story buildings now stretched out across the property, fenced in by a high security double fence topped with razor wire. Buildings range from three of the five original cottages to a new state of the art "K" shaped building that can house 400 offenders. Also on campus is a school and library for offenders working toward a GED or in the adult basic education program.
