Sebastián (sculptor)
Sebastián (born Enrique Carbajal González on November 16, 1947) is a Mexican sculptor best known for his monumental works of steel and/or concrete in both Mexico and abroad. These include a number of “gate” sculptures such as the Gran Puerta a México in Matamoros, Tamaulipas but his most famous sculpture is the “Caballito” located in downtown Mexico City. His works are found in various countries outside Mexico, such as Japan where two are now used as city symbols. Early life and career Sebastián was born Enrique Carbajal González on November 16, 1947 in Santa Rosalía de Camargo, Chihuahua in northern Mexico.''Sebastián.'' Mexico: Grupo Financiero Bital, 1996. Santa Rosalía de Camargo, originally called Santa Rosalía, and now known as "Ciudad Camargo" (Camargo City), is a city in the eastern part of the States of Mexico, Mexican state of Chihuahua (state), Chihuahua, located at the confluence of the Rio Parral and the Rio Conchos in the Allende Valley. Palacio De Bellas Artes
The Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) is a prominent cultural center in Mexico City. It has hosted notable events in music, dance, theatre, opera and literature in Mexico and has held important exhibitions of painting, sculpture and photography. Consequently, the Palacio de Bellas Artes has been called the "Cathedral of Art in Mexico". Nuevo León () is a state in the northeast region of Mexico. El Caballito (Sebastián)
''El Caballito'', officially ''Cabeza de caballo'' ("horse's head"), is an outdoor tall steel sculpture by Sebastián (Enrique Carbajal) depicting a horse's head, installed along Mexico City's Paseo de la Reforma Paseo de la Reforma (translated as "Promenade of the Reform") is a wide avenue that runs diagonally across the heart of Mexico City. It was designed at the behest of Emperor Maximilian by Ferdinand von Rosenzweig during the era of the Secon ..., in Mexico. It was dedicated on January 15, 1992. Enrique Carbajal (Sebastian) created the El Caballito monument under the Olmec conception. The El Caballito was installed in front of the Torre del Caballito, a high office building. The monument had to replace the Equestrian statue of Carlos IV which was removed from there in 1979, and also had to be some kind of chimney that would dissipate the vapors from deep drainage but wouldn't adversely affect the image of the Paseo de la Reforma.
