Seattle Flute Society
The Seattle Flute Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Seattle, Washington. It was founded in 1979 to present recitals, master classes, and other flute events for Seattle area flutists. History Members are amateur and professional flutists, teachers, students, flute makers, accompanists, listeners, patrons – anyone interested in the flute. Activities include meetings, ensemble performances, lectures, workshops, discussions, and solo performances by local and international flutists. The SFS sponsors a flute choir which is open to all adult members. Each year, the Flute Society holds a "Flute Festival" where instruments, music, accessories and other flute-related merchandise are exhibited, demonstrated and sold. Walfrid Kujala
Walfrid, or Galfrido della Gherardesca, was an eighth-century saint from Pisa, Italy. Life and death Though he had six children with his long-time wife, Thesia, they conducted a dutifully religious lifestyle. He co-founded the Abbey of Palazzuolo on Monte Verde; his wife and one of his daughters took the veil in a convent built nearby. His favorite son, Gimfrid, caused Walfrid a great deal of trouble when he ran away from the monastery. Caught and permanently injured in his right hand, a penitent Gimfrid was returned to the monastery, which he presided over after Walfrid's death. Walfrid died in 765 AD and was sainted in 1861. Paul Taub
The Seattle Chamber Players are a chamber ensemble focused on contemporary music, founded in 1989 in Seattle, Washington, U.S. In January 2004, the group was awarded the ASCAP/Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming. , the core members are Laura DeLuca (clarinet), David Sabee (cello), Mikhail Shmidt (violin), and Paul Taub (flute). DeLuca, Sabee, and Schmidt are members of the Seattle Symphony (SSO); Shmidt is also a former member of the Moscow State Symphony; Taub is a professor of music at Cornish College of the Arts. Felix Skowronek
Felix Skowronek (August 21, 1935 – April 17, 2006) was an American flutist and professor of music. Education Skowronek studied in Seattle with Fred H. Wing and Frank Horsfall, and for a few summers with Donald Peck. He later studied with William Kincaid at the Curtis Institute of Music. Career Skowronek played principal flute for the Seattle Symphony (1956–57 and 1959–60), Seventh Army Symphony (1957–59), Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra (1960–66), and St. Louis Symphony (1966–68), and was a member of the Casals Festival orchestra in Puerto Rico. Trevor Wye
Trevor Wye (born 6 June 1935) is a professional flautist, flute instructor, and author of several books about technical aspects of flute playing. He founded the International Summer School for flute. The English flautist Trevor Wye began playing the flute at age 15. Contrary to what might be expected of a famous flautist, Wye did not attend a college of music, nor a conservatory, nor a university, but he later studied with Marcel Moyse whom Wye credits as a major influence on his playing, teaching, and writing career. Ransom Wilson (born 25 October 1951 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama) is an American flutist, conductor, and educator. He currently is an Artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Le Train Bleu ensemble, Music Director of the Redlands Symphony, and he performs concerts and recitals in notable venues worldwide. Mimi Stillman is a professional concert flutist. Career Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Stillman became, at the age of 12, the youngest flute player ever admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music, where she studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner. Alexa Still
Alexa Still (born 1962) is a New Zealand-born flutist based in Oberlin, Ohio, where she is an Associate Professor of Flute at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Still studied in the US with Samuel Baron at SUNY Stony Brook (MM, DMA) and with Thomas Nyfenger. Early in her career she won several competitions including the New York Flute Club Young Artist Competition, and East and West Artists Competition for a New York Debut. Still returned to New Zealand for eleven years to take the position of Principal Flute with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Fenwick Smith
Fenwick Smith (1949 – July 19, 2017) was an American flutist. He studied under Joseph Mariano at the Eastman School of Music, graduating from there in 1972. Shortly thereafter he became a member of the New England Woodwind Quintet and began a thirteen-year membership with Boston Musica Viva. He became the assistant principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1978, serving in that position until September 2006. During this time he was also principal flutist of the Boston Pops Orchestra. Smith was also a member of the Boston Chamber Music Society since 1984, and since 1983 gave annual recitals at Jordan Hall. Paula Robison (born June 8, 1941) is a flute soloist and teacher. Early life and education Paula Robison was born in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of David V. and Naomi Robison, an actor. David Robison was a playwright and writer for film and television. Her paternal grandmother was a piano teacher, her maternal uncle the playwright Jerome Lawrence, and there were other musicians and dancers in the family. David studied in Vienna, and upon his return joined the faculty of Fisk University.
