Sean McCann (politician)
Sean Andrew McCann (born September 21, 1971) is the senator for the Michigan Senate's 19th district. He formerly represented the 20th senate district. He is a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives, who represented the 60th district. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Personal life and education McCann graduated from Western Michigan University in 1993 with a degree in political science. Career McCann served on the Kalamazoo, Michigan City Commission for ten years, starting in 1999. He was elected to the Michigan House in 2011. In 2013, he proposed the creation of an independent commission to draw legislative districts in the state, in order to help prevent gerrymandering. Michigan Senate
The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives, it composes the state legislature, which has powers, roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution, adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws. The Michigan Senate is composed of 38 members, each elected from a single-member district with a population of between approximately 212,400 to 263,500 residents. Legislative districts are drawn on the basis of population figures, provided by the federal decennial census. Senators' terms begin immediately upon their election. Republicans hold the majority in the State Senate with twenty-two seats; Democrats hold the minority with sixteen seats. Gerrymandering
In representative democracies, gerrymandering (, originally ) is the political manipulation of electoral district boundaries with the intent to create undue advantage for a party, group, or socioeconomic class within the constituency. The manipulation may involve "cracking" (diluting the voting power of the opposing party's supporters across many districts) or "packing" (concentrating the opposing party's voting power in one district to reduce their voting power in other districts). Gerrymandering can also be used to protect incumbents. Wayne Dawkins describes it as politicians picking their voters instead of voters picking their politicians. Lorence Wenke
Lorence R. Wenke (born October 9, 1945) is an American politician from the state of Michigan. He is a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives. Career Wenke served in the Michigan House of Representatives. In 2004, Wenke was one of only two Republicans in the state legislature to vote against adding an amendment to the Michigan Constitution outlawing gay marriage. Tonya Schuitmaker defeated Wenke in the 2010 Republican Party primary election for the 20th district of the Michigan Senate. With Schuitmaker running for reelection in a different district in the 2014 election, Wenke announced that he would run for the 20th district seat in September 2013. In 2014, he switched to the Libertarian Party over difference with the Republican Party on gay marriage and issues surrounding taxation.
