Sea World San Antonio
SeaWorld San Antonio is a marine mammal park, oceanarium and animal theme park in the Westover Hills District of San Antonio, Texas, on the city's west side. It is the largest of the three parks in the SeaWorld chain owned and operated by SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment and one of the world's largest marine-life theme parks focused on conservation, education and animal rescue. It is a member of the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA) and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). History The park, initially called Sea World of Texas, was developed by Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich (now Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). SeaWorld is an American theme park chain with headquarters in Orlando, Florida. ''Shamu'' was the stage name used for several captive performing orcas at SeaWorld as part of their theatrical ''Shamu show'' beginning in 1960s. The original Shamu died in 1971, but the name was trademarked by SeaWorld and has been given to different orcas throughout the years. In March 2016, following the 2010 death of orca trainer Dawn Brancheau and subsequent public backlash from the 2013 documentary ''Blackfish'', SeaWorld announced they would be ending their orca breeding program and phasing out their orca shows, instead opting to introduce, "new, inspiring, natural orca encounters rather than theatrical shows,… ocusingon orca enrichment, exercise and overall health." Bolliger & Mabillard, officially Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers, Inc. and often abbreviated B&M, is a roller coaster design consultancy based in Monthey, Switzerland. The company was founded in 1988 by Walter Bolliger and Claude Mabillard, both of whom had worked for Giovanola. B&M has pioneered several new ride technologies, most notably the inverted roller coaster and the box-section track. In 2016, the company completed its 100th roller coaster. The Great White (SeaWorld San Antonio)
The Great White is a steel inverted roller coaster at SeaWorld San Antonio, and the first roller coaster to be built at a SeaWorld park. It is not only the first inverted roller coaster in Texas, but also the first one in the state to be built by Bolliger & Mabillard. Characteristics Despite its shortened track length, The Great White follows an identical ride layout as the Batman the Ride coasters at numerous Six Flags parks. At 2,562 feet (about 150 shorter than Batman's 2,693 foot layout), the coaster doesn't allow riders as much time to "recuperate" between inversions, consequently offering an extreme, forceful ride experience.
