Sea Research Society
The Sea Research Society (SRS) is a non-profit organization promoting research and education in marine science and history. Founded in 1972 by underwater archaeologist Dr. E. Lee Spence, SRS undertakes archival research and underwater expeditions in search of historic shipwrecks. From 1972 to 1978, it also operated the College of Marine Arts. History Dr. E. Lee Spence, an underwater explorer and early pioneer in the field of underwater archaeology, founded the Sea Research Society in 1972. In the early years, SRS was billed as a research college for marine sciences, including biology and archaeology, located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, near Charleston, South Carolina, Charleston. College Of Marine Arts
The College of Marine Arts was operated as the Sea Research Society's formal higher education wing from 1972 until 1978. It was initially located in Columbia, South Carolina and later moved to Mount Pleasant, outside of Charleston where it was housed in the former Berkeley County courthouse building on Pitt Street. Students participated in classroom workshops on history and artifact identification & conservation as well as in underwater archaeological projects on the wrecks of the Civil War blockade runners '' Georgiana'', '' Mary Bowers'' and ''Constance'' as well as paleontological projects in the Cooper River and refuse sites in the Ashley River. SS Georgia
SS ''Georgia'' was an oil tanker that was built in the United States in 1908 as ''Texas'' and spent most of her career in the United States Merchant Marine. In 1917 she was renamed ''Georgia''. In 1927 she was transferred to Dutch ownership, and shortly thereafter ran aground and was lost on Haisborough Sands off the coast of Norfolk, England. History Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company built the ship at Newport News, Virginia as hull number 82. She was launched as ''Texas'' on 24 April 1908 and delivered to her owners, The Texas Company (now Texaco) on 18 July 1908. The Texas Company registered the ship at Port Arthur, Texas. CSS ''David'' was an American Civil War-era torpedo boat. On October 5, 1863, she undertook a partially successful attack on which was participating in the blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. Construction Based upon a design by St. Julien Ravenel, ''David'' was built as a private venture by T. Stoney at Charleston, South Carolina, in 1863, and was put under the control of the Confederate States Navy (CSN). The cigar-shaped boat carried a explosive charge of gunpowder on the end of a spar projecting forward from her bow. Jim McNeill is a former scientist and British polar explorer, presenter and keynote speaker, with over 36 years of experience travelling and working in the polar regions. Peter Throckmorton
Edgerton Alvord Throckmorton (July 30, 1928 – June 5, 1990), known as Peter Throckmorton, was an American photojournalist and a pioneer underwater archaeologist. Throckmorton was a founding member of the Sea Research Society and served on its Board of Advisors until his death in 1990. He was also a trustee for NUMA and was an instructor at Nova Southeastern University. Discoveries * The Cape Gelidonya shipwreck (c. 1200 BC) was discovered near the eponymous Cape Gelidonya, Turkey by Throckmorton in 1959 using information provided him by Kemal Aras, a sponge diver from Bodrum, Turkey who had first seen parts of the vessel's cargo of bronze ingots in 1954, but who had failed to recognize that it was actually a Bronze Age shipwreck and thus its archaeological importance.
