SeaChoice
SeaChoice is an environmental advocacy group based in Canada. Launched in 2006, SeaChoice was created to increase consumer awareness around seafood sustainability in Canada. For 10 years, its primary goal was shifting seafood procurement to more sustainable options, with a focus on seafood suppliers and Canadian retailers. Having made significant progress in the retail landscape between 2006 and 2016, with many of their retail partners meeting their sustainable seafood commitments, SeaChoice set a new goal to increase sustainability throughout the entire seafood supply chain, from water to table. SeaChoice is a partnership among the David Suzuki Foundation, Ecology Action Centre, and Living Oceans Society. Each conservation organization is also a member of the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions and works with consumers, retailers, suppliers, government and producers to accomplish their objectives. David Suzuki Foundation
The David Suzuki Foundation is a science-based non-profit environmental organization headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with offices in Montreal and Toronto. It was established as a federally registered Canadian charity on January 1, 1991. By 2007, it had 40,000 donors. Its mission is to protect nature while balancing human needs. It is supported entirely by Foundation grants and donations and by 2012, 90% of its donors were Canadian. By 2007, the Foundation employed about seventy-five staff members. Marine Stewardship Council
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a non-profit organization which aims to set standards for sustainable fishing. Fisheries that wish to demonstrate they are well-managed and sustainable compared to the MSC's standards are assessed by a team of Conformity Assessment Bodies (CABs). The mission of the MSC is to use its ecolabel, for which the MSC receives royalties for licensing it to products, and fishery certification program to recognise and reward sustainable fishing practices. The MSC has faced criticism in the past, mainly centering on its close ties to the fishing industry and conflict of interest stemming from royalties received by the industry for its certification label. Ecology Action Centre
The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is a non-profit environmental organization founded in 1971 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, credited with launching the province's first recycling program. EAC's 40 employed staff and 300 volunteers work with researchers, policymakers, and the community toward sustainability in seven focus areas: Built Environment, Coastal and Water, Wilderness, Food Action, Marine, Transportation, and Energy. The EAC has received numerous commendations for its evidence-based programs and policy work, including winning The Coast's award for Best Activist Organization each year from 2004 to 2016, being named one of Tides Canada's Top 10 in both 2003 and 2010, winning an Arthur Kroeger Award for Public Affairs in 2009, and being named one of the Globe and Mail's 10 best-run charities in Canada in 2000. Seafood Watch
__NOTOC__ Seafood Watch is a sustainable seafood advisory list, and has influenced similar programs around the world. It is best known for developing science-based seafood recommendations that consumers, chefs, and business professionals use to inform their seafood purchasing decisions. Seafood Watch is a program of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It has roots in the Monterey Bay Aquarium's ''Fishing for Solutions'' exhibit, which ran from 1997 to 1999 and produced a list of sustainable seafood. It was one of the first resources for sustainable seafood information together with the Audubon Society's ''What is a fish lover to eat?'' which also came out in the late 1990s. Seafood Watch assesses impacts on marine and freshwater ecosystems of fisheries (wild-caught) and aquaculture (farming) operations. Fishing And The Environment
Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are often caught as wildlife from the natural environment, but may also be caught from stocked bodies of water such as ponds, canals, park wetlands and reservoirs. Fishing techniques include hand-gathering, spearing, netting, angling, shooting and trapping, as well as more destructive and often illegal techniques such as electrocution, blasting and poisoning. The term fishing broadly includes catching aquatic animals other than fish, such as crustaceans ( shrimp/ lobsters/ crabs), shellfish, cephalopods ( octopus/ squid) and echinoderms ( starfish/ sea urchins). A sustainable food system is a type of food system that provides healthy food to people and creates sustainable environmental, economic and social systems that surround food.
