It rises in southwestern Waukesha County and flows generally westwardly into Jefferson County, past the village of Palmyra. It joins the Bark River in Jefferson County, north of Whitewater. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names settled on "Scuppernong River" as the stream's name in 1906. According to the Geographic Names Information System, it has also been known historically as "Schupernong River", "Scupernong River", and "Scuppernong Creek." The Ho-Chunk language (''Hoocąk, Hocąk''), also known as Winnebago, is the traditional language of the Ho-Chunk (or Winnebago) nation of Native Americans in the United States. The language is part of the Siouan language family, and is closely related to the languages of the Iowa, Missouri, and Oto. "Winnebago" is an exonym, an Anglicization of the Sauk and Fox word ''Oinepegi''. The anglicized form of the endonym is "Ho-Chunk". Palmyra is a village in Jefferson County, Wisconsin, United States, along the Scuppernong River. It was named after the desert oasis city of Palmyra, Syria, due to its dry, sandy soil.
