Scotty Wiseman
Myrtle Eleanor Cooper (December 24, 1913 – February 8, 1999) and Scott Greene Wiseman (November 8, 1909 – January 31, 1981), known professionally as Lulu Belle and Scotty, were one of the major country music acts of the 1930s and 1940s, dubbed The Sweethearts of Country Music. Career Myrtle Eleanor Cooper (Lulu Belle) was born in Boone, North Carolina, United States; Wiseman was from Spruce Pine, North Carolina. Lulu Belle and Scotty enjoyed enormous national popularity thanks to their regular appearances on ''National Barn Dance'' on WLS-AM in Chicago, a rival to WSM-AM's ''Grand Ole Opry''. ''Barn Dance'' enjoyed a large radio audience in the 1930s and early 1940s with some 20 million Americans regularly tuning in. Starday Records was an American record label producing traditional country music during the 1950s and 1960s. History The label began in 1952 in Beaumont, Texas, when local businessmen Jack Starnes (Lefty Frizzell's manager) and Houston record distributor Harold W. Daily (better known as "Pappy") decided to form a record label. The Starday name is a combination of Starnes' and Daily's last names. After four releases, former Four Star vice president Don Pierce was brought into the fold and the three men founded the Starday Recording and Publishing Company. Soon after, Starnes sold his shares out to Pierce. In the mid-1950s, Art Talmadge of Mercury Records made Starday a unique proposition, whereby Mercury contracted out all production of Country and Bluegrass music to Starday Records. This move proved not to be the success Mercury had hoped it would be, and this resulted in an acrimonious split between Daily and Pierce. Old Homestead Records was a record label based in Michigan specializing in preserving and reissuing recordings of traditional country and bluegrass artists. History John W. Morris launched Old Homestead Record company in 1971 to release new and archival recordings by country singer and banjoist Wade Mainer. Sublabels included Broadway Intermission, Collectors Series, and Rutabaga Records. On Broadway Intermission, Morris released Bing Crosby's 1945 "Seventh Air Force Tribute" to vinyl from transcripts of a World War II Armed Forces Radio broadcast. Portageville is a city in New Madrid and Pemiscot counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 2,942 according to the 2020 Census. History A post office called Portageville has been in operation since 1873. The community takes its name from nearby Portage Bayou. From 1935 to 1936, Portageville was the home of the Portageville Pirates, part of the Kitty League. "In 1935, the Portageville Pirates are awarded the second-half title after the Jackson Generals and Union City Greyhounds are disqualified for having too many class players on their rosters."
