Scottish Refugee Council
The Scottish Refugee Council is a registered charity that provides advice and services to asylum seekers and refugees. The objective of the organisation is ‘building a better future with refugees in Scotland’. The charity was formed in Edinburgh in 1985 but moved to Glasgow in 1999 as the city became one of the main dispersal areas for refugees. Its remit has expanded over time in response to growing demand for its services and is now the leading charity for refugees in Scotland. In 2011 the organisation celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Refugee Convention. In recognition of the international convention that underpins the Scottish Refugee Council's work, the charity produced a short film, ''Courage: 60 years of the UN Refugee Convention''. Sabir Zazai
Sabir Zazai is a former refugee from Afghanistan, who became the CEO of the Scottish Refugee Council. He has honorary doctorates from the University of Glasgow, The Open University and an OBE. Zazai was also conferred with fellowship of Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2022 and the Lord Provost's Award For Human Rights in 2019. Life Zazai was born in Afghanistan, where his early education was disrupted by the Afghan Civil War. In 1999 he arrived in the UK with only seven years of formal education and he was accommodated in Coventry, as part of the UK's asylum dispersal policy. In 2002 he began his first job in the UK working with refugee children in Coventry. He was invited to talk at Coventry Cathedral and a friend, Penny Walker, who had started the Coventry Refugee and Migrant Centre, arranged for an interview on the BBC. Scottish society is the group behaviour of Scots, how they organise themselves and make decisions. The social history of Scotland is a major field within the academic study of Scottish history. The North of England Refugee Service (NERS) is an independent and charitable organisation which exists to meet the needs and represent the interests of asylum seekers and refugees who have arrived or have settled in the North East of England. NERS acts as an agent of positive change in order to improve the conditions of life for asylum seekers and refugees and promote social inclusion by facilitating their integration and equal participation within British society. Asylum Support Partnership
The Asylum Support Partnership (ASP) is the largest asylum seeker support organisations in the United Kingdom and claims to be the only one giving asylum support over the whole of Britain. The mission of the Partnership (ASP) is to ensure that 'all those seeking asylum in Britain have their human rights upheld and that those seeking asylum in our community receive the support and opportunities they need to live independently.’ Their core values are to ‘assist all asylum seekers regardless of race, religion, gender, health or sexuality’.
