Scottish Graphical Association
Scottish Typographical Association was a labour union representing typesetters in Scotland. It was founded in 1853. In 1974, it merged with the Society of Graphical and Allied Trades (SOGAT). , The formation of the union was organised by the Glasgow Typographical Society, although it incorporated local societies in other Scottish burghs. Membership gradually rose, reaching 4,700 in 1910. The union was a founding member of the Printing and Kindred Trades Federation and, following a demarcation decision of the federation in 1928, it organised only assistants in case and machine rooms in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow, but all typographical workers in the rest of Scotland.Arthur Marsh and John B. The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) is the National trade union center, national trade union centre in Scotland. With 40 affiliated unions as of 2020, the STUC represents over 540,000 trade unionists. The STUC is a separate organisation from the English and Welsh Trades Union Congress (TUC), having been established in 1897 as a result of a political dispute with the TUC regarding political representation for the Labour Party (UK)#Early years (1906–1923), Labour movement. The Printing and Kindred Trades Federation (P&KTF) was a trade union federation in the United Kingdom. History The federation was established at a conference in Manchester on 8 September 1890, organised on the initiative of George D. Kelley. Society Of Graphical And Allied Trades
The Society of Graphical and Allied Trades (SOGAT) was a British trade union in the printing industry. History SOGAT was formed in 1966 by the National Union of Printing, Bookbinding and Paper Workers and the National Society of Operative Printers and Assistants (NATSOPA). The National Union of Printing, Bookbinding and Paper Workers became the Society of Graphical and Allied Trades Division A and NATSOPA became the Society of Graphical and Allied Trades Division 1. The aim was to achieve a complete merger over time, but differences led to in-fighting and in 1970 the two divisions split, Division A retaining the name Society of Graphical and Allied Trades and Division 1 becoming the National Society of Operative Printers, Graphical and Media Personnel (but retaining the NATSOPA acronym). John Battersby
John Battersby (1839–1922) was a Scottish trade unionist and politician. Born in Glasgow, Battersby completed an apprenticeship as a compositor with the '' Glasgow Courier'' newspaper. He joined the Scottish Typographical Association, and in 1874 he was elected as its secretary, serving until 1887, during which time he led a major reorganisation of the society. He became known for his integrity, and was nicknamed "Honest John". As leader of the association, Battersby represented it to the Trades Union Congress (TUC). When the TUC was held in Glasgow, in 1875, he was elected as its president. In his address to the conference, he argued that the TUC should assist in obtaining a Factory Act regulating conditions of work in India. Following the conference, he served two terms on the Parliamentary Committee of the TUC.
