Scott Pera
Scott Pera (born August 27, 1967) is an American college basketball coach and current head coach for the Rice Owls men's basketball team. Coaching career Pera started his coaching career at Elizabethtown College in 1992, before embarking on a high school coaching career in Pennsylvania and California, most notably Artesia High School (California), Artesia High School, where he coached James Harden. In his high school coaching career, Pera compiled a 258–65 record. In the college ranks, Pera joined Herb Sendek's staff at Arizona State Sun Devils men's basketball, Arizona State, where he began as the director of basketball operations before being elevated to assistant coach. From 2012 to 2014, Pera was an assistant coach at Penn Quakers men's basketball, Penn under Jerome Allen (basketball), Jerome Allen. Rice Owls Men's Basketball
The Rice Owls men's basketball program is the intercollegiate men's basketball program of Rice University. The program is classified in the NCAA's Division I, and the team competes in Conference USA. They previously participated in the Southwest Conference (1914–1996) and the Western Athletic Conference (1996–2005). The Owls play their home games in Tudor Fieldhouse, which they have called home since 1950. Previously known as Rice Gymnasium, it was renamed in honor of Rice alum Bobby Tudor, who spearheaded the 2008 renovation of the facility with a multimillion-dollar donation. The court is designated "Autry Court" in memory of Mrs. James L. Autry. Her husband James Lockhart Autry was a descendant of Micajah Autry, who was a hero of the Battle of the Alamo. Her daughter, Mrs. Edward W. Kelley, made a generous donation to the gymnasium building fund in honor of her late mother, an ardent supporter of Rice. Conference USA
Conference USA (C-USA or CUSA) is an intercollegiate athletic conference whose current member institutions are located within the Southern United States. The conference participates in the NCAA's Division I in all sports. C-USA's offices are located in Dallas, Texas. History C-USA was founded in 1995 by the merger of the Metro Conference and Great Midwest Conference, two Division I conferences that did not sponsor football. However, the merger did not include either Great Midwest member Dayton or Metro members VCU and Virginia Tech. Since this left an uneven number of schools in the conference, Houston of the dissolving Southwest Conference was extended an invitation and agreed to join following the SWC's disbanding at the end of the 1995–96 academic year. 2022–23 Rice Owls Men's Basketball Team
The 2022–23 Rice Owls men's basketball team represented Rice University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by sixth-year head coach Scott Pera, and played their home games at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston, Texas as members of Conference USA (C-USA). The Owls finished the season 19–16, 8–12 in C-USA play, to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. As the No. 6 seed in the C-USA tournament, they defeated UTSA before losing to UAB. They received an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational where they defeated Duquesne before losing to Southern Utah in quarterfinals. 2022–23 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Season
The 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season began on November 7, 2022. The regular season will end on March 12, 2023, with the 2023 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament beginning on March 14 and ending with the championship game at NRG Stadium in Houston on April 3. Rule changes The following rule changes were recommended by the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee to the Playing Rules Oversight Panel for the 2022−23 season: * Flopping will now result in a Class B technical foul. 2022 College Basketball Invitational
The 2022 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) was a single-elimination, fully-bracketed men’s college basketball postseason tournament featuring 16 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I teams not selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament or the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The tournament began on March 19 and concluded on March 23. Semifinal and championship games aired on ESPN2. The tournament was won by UNC Wilmington. In 2021, CBI was held for the first time in Daytona Beach, Florida, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, the tournament had been held on campus sites. In response to feedback received for the 2021 playing, CBI returned to the Ocean Center in 2022, which was the 14th edition of the tournament. 2019–20 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Season
The 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season began on November 5, 2019. The first tournament was the 2K Sports Classic and the season concluded prematurely on March 12, 2020. The 2020 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament was scheduled to end in Atlanta on April 6, 2020, but was ultimately canceled. All other postseason tournaments were canceled as well. Practices officially began in late September. On March 12, 2020, the NCAA announced that all remaining winter and spring championships for both men's and women's sports were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
