Fiddle
A fiddle is a bowed string musical instrument, most often a violin. It is a colloquial term for the violin, used by players in all genres, including classical music. Although in many cases violins and fiddles are essentially synonymous, the style of the music played may determine specific construction differences between fiddles and classical violins. For example, fiddles may optionally be set up with a bridge with a flatter arch to reduce the range of bow-arm motion needed for techniques such as the double shuffle, a form of bariolage involving rapid alternation between pairs of adjacent strings. To produce a "brighter" tone than the deep tones of gut or synthetic core strings, fiddlers often use steel strings. The fiddle is part of many traditional (folk) styles, which are typically aural traditions—taught " by ear" rather than via written music. Fiddling is the act of playing the fiddle, and fiddlers are musicians that play it. Among musical styles, fiddling tends to p ...

Buenas Noches From A Lonely Room
''Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room'' is the third studio album by American country music singer Dwight Yoakam, released on August 2, 1988. The album contains Yoakam's first two No. 1 Hot Country Singles singles. The first was "Streets of Bakersfield," a duet with country music veteran Buck Owens, who had originally released a version of the song in 1973. The second was an original composition of Yoakam's titled "I Sang Dixie." A third song on the album, "I Got You," also an original composition, peaked at No. 5. The title song, "Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (She Wore Red Dresses)," also charted, but only to the No. 46 position. Background Yoakam's first two Reprise albums, 1986's ''Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.'' and 1987's ''Hillbilly Deluxe'', both hit #1 on the ''Billboard'' country albums chart and established him as one of the hottest stars in what was being referred to as the "New Traditionalist" movement, a shift away from the slick productions of Nashville to a more ...

Chicago Wind
''Chicago Wind'' is the fifty-eighth studio album by American Country music, country singer and songwriter Merle Haggard, released in 2005. It peaked at number 54 on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Top Country Albums chart. A video was made for the track "America First". Critical reception Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic praised the album, writing "Chicago Wind is not the rough and rowdy honky tonk album some fans have been hankering for, but it is a poetic, thoughtful and empathic one that once more displays why Merle Haggard is the living king of country music." Track listing All tracks composed by Merle Haggard; except where indicated # "Chicago Wind" – 4:08 # "Where's All the Freedom" – 3:22 # "White Man Singin' the Blues" – 3:47 # "Leavin's Not the Only Way to Go" (Roger Miller) – 3:38 # "What I've Been Meaning to Say" – 2:36 # "Mexico" – 3:11 # "Honky Tonk Man" (Dewayne Blackwell) – 3:04 # "America First" – 2:43 # "It Always Will Be" (Willie Ne ...

Haggard Like Never Before
''Like Never Before'' is the fifty-fifth studio album by American recording artist Merle Haggard. It was released in 2004 on his own label, Hag Records. Background After several gospel and roots music albums, this collection boasts a more diverse musical landscape than his critically acclaimed comeback album '' If I Could Only Fly'', ranging from the western swing of "Garbage Man" and "Lonesome Day" to the jazz-inflected "Because of Your Eyes" and the mariachi-infused "Return to San Francisco". Haggard duets with friend Willie Nelson on "Reno Blues". The album is perhaps best remembered for the song "That's the News", a scathing indictment of media culture and the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq in the early 2000s. In a 2006 interview the notoriously patriotic Haggard defended the Dixie Chicks after they were lambasted for their criticism of President George W. Bush.http://www.sanluisobispo.com/entertainment/music-news-reviews/article70318112.html Reception Th ...

Population Me
''Population Me'' is the 13th studio album by Dwight Yoakam. It was released in June 2003 via the Audium Records label. The album spawned two singles, "The Back of Your Hand" and "The Late Great Golden State". Background After fulfilling his contract with Reprise, Yoakam moved to Warner Bros. and released the soundtrack to ''South of Heaven – West of Hell'', a film he wrote, directed, and ultimately financed, much to his own detriment; the movie was panned by critics and went largely unseen. Yoakam then signed with Audium and became a top priority, but the budget for recording was scaled down considerably and the independent label did not have the muscle to get Yoakam the radio play necessary for a return to his commercial heyday at Reprise. Recording and composition Although unquestionably a country record, ''Population Me'' offers a wider array of musical colors than the straight country sound on Yoakam's 2000 studio release ''Tomorrow’s Sounds Today''. South Of Heaven, West Of Hell (album)
''South of Heaven, West of Hell'' is country singer Dwight Yoakam's 12th studio album, and the first soundtrack album to the motion picture of the same name in which he starred, co-wrote and directed. Yoakam portrays a lawman in the early 1900s in the "wild west" of the Arizona Territory. Half of the tracks in the album are country music tracks. The other tracks are short snippets of straight dialog scenes from the film itself. There are many well-known co-stars in the movie, including Peter Fonda, Bridget Fonda, Paul Reubens, Billy Bob Thornton, Warren Zevon and Vince Vaughn. This was also Yoakam's only album for Warner Bros. after leaving Reprise. Background Yoakam, a former drama student who received good reviews for playing an assortment of weirdos and psychopaths in the Nineties, decided to write, produce, score, and star in his own film. On just about every front, the project was an unmitigated disaster. Shortly before production began, the financier backed out and Yoakam ...

Tomorrow's Sounds Today
''Tomorrow's Sounds Today'' is the eleventh studio album by American country music artist Dwight Yoakam. This album was released on October 31, 2000. It rose to No. 7 on the Billboard Country Albums chart. There were two charting singles among its tracks: "What Do You Know About Love" at No. 26 and "I Want You to Want Me" (a cover of the 1979 Cheap Trick hit) at No. 49 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Also included are two duets with Buck Owens, who was a big influence on Yoakam's musical style. It was also Yoakam's last studio album for the Reprise label. After that album's release, Yoakam left Reprise for Warner Bros. in 2001. Background In the Nineties, Yoakam had been a musician who dabbled in movies, but by 2000 he was absorbed in a film project of his own called ''South of Heaven - West of Hell''. This left his music career in the lurch in the latter part of the decade, with his releases becoming more sporadic. Yoakam and producer-guitarist Pete Anderson had helped revital ...

A Long Way Home (album)
''A Long Way Home'' is the ninth studio album by American country music artist Dwight Yoakam, released on June 9, 1998. It reached No. 11 on the Billboard Country Album, with two of its tracks charting on the Hot Country Singles chart. "Things Change" reached No. 17, while "These Arms" peaked at No. 57. Yoakam wrote all the songs on the album himself. Recording and composition Yoakam wrote most of the songs while shooting ''The Newton Boys'' with Austin director Richard Linklater. Although the country star's commercial stock fell as his interest in acting grew in the latter half of the Nineties, Yoakam later insisted: Musically speaking, ''A Long Way Home'' is a return to a more palatable country sound compared to some of the ambitious material on Yoakam's previous studio album ''Gone'' (1995) and the cover album ''Under the Covers'' (1997), which contained rock, pop, soul, and Motown influences. Yoakam later admitted that "…we knew we’d probably taken it as far as it cou ...

Under The Covers (Dwight Yoakam Album)
''Under the Covers'' is the seventh studio album, and the first covers album recorded by Dwight Yoakam. It peaked at No. 8 on ''Billboards Top Country Albums chart, and No. 92 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Background As he had on the commercially disappointing ''Gone'' two years before, Yoakam continued to challenge expectations with a mixed bag of covers, including songs by The Clash, The Kinks, The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones that betrayed the singer’s affection for British rock. Two songs, "Here Comes the Night" and "Things We Said Today", were previously recorded for the 1992 compilation album ''La Croix d'Amour''. Various cuts, such as Roy Orbison’s "Claudette" and the Wynn Stewart hit "Playboy," fit him like a glove, with producer/guitarist Pete Anderson supplying arrangements that work to Yoakam’s strengths, but the Vegas lounge take of The Kinks' "Tired of Waiting for You" likely baffled listeners, with Yoakam biographer Don McCleese deeming it "a Rat Pack/Vegas m ...

Gone (Dwight Yoakam Album)
''Gone'' is the sixth studio album by American country music artist Dwight Yoakam, released on October 31, 1995 by Reprise Records. The album peaked at #5 on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Country Albums chart. It produced three singles on the ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Hot Country Songs charts: "Nothing" at #20, "Gone (That'll Be Me)" at #51, and "Sorry You Asked?" at #59. The final single, "Heart of Stone", failed to chart in the United States. This was also the first album of his career not to produce a Top Ten country hit. Background All of Yoakam's first three albums hit #1 on the country albums chart and, after the transitional ''If There Was a Way'' in 1990, he scored the biggest album of his career with 1993's ''This Time (Dwight Yoakam album), This Time'', which went triple platinum and spawned three Top 5 singles, including the #2 single "Fast as You", which also made ''Billboard'' Hot 100. This commercial momentum came to an abrupt halt with the release ...
