''Scores: Songs from "Copacabana" and "Harmony"'' is Barry Manilow's third album with Concord Records. It features selections from two musicals that feature original music by Manilow and lyrics by Bruce Sussman. The first half of the record features songs from ''Copacabana: The Musical''. "Dancin' Fool", "Sweet Heaven", and "Copacabana", which had been previously recorded and released, were re-recorded. "Who Needs To Dream" is a previously released song which was included on the soundtrack to the television version of Copacabana which starred Barry Manilow. And "This Can’t Be Real" is duet with Olivia Newton-John. The second half of the album features songs from the musical ''Harmony'' based on a true story about the German singing group the Comedian Harmonists. The musical, with music by Manilow and book and lyrics by Sussman, had its world premier at the La Jolla Playhouse and subsequent productions at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow (born Barry Alan Pincus; June 17, 1943) is an American singer and songwriter with a career that spans seven decades. His hit recordings include "Could It Be Magic", " Somewhere Down the Road", " Mandy", "I Write the Songs", " Can't Smile Without You" and "Copacabana (At the Copa)". He has recorded and released 51 Top 40 singles on the Adult Contemporary Chart, including 13 that hit number one, 28 that appeared within the top ten, and 36 that reached the top twenty. Manilow has released 13 platinum and six multi-platinum albums. Although not a favorite artist of music critics, Manilow has been praised by his peers in the recording industry, including Frank Sinatra, who was quoted in the 1970s as saying, "He's next." La Jolla Playhouse
La Jolla Playhouse is a not-for-profit, professional theatre on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. History La Jolla Playhouse was founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, and Mel Ferrer. In 1983, it was revived under the leadership of Des McAnuff. Copacabana (At The Copa)
"Copacabana", also known as "Copacabana (At the Copa)", is a song recorded by Barry Manilow. Written by Manilow, Jack Feldman, and Bruce Sussman, it was released in 1978 as the third and final single from Manilow's fifth studio album, '' Even Now'' (1978). Background The song was inspired by a conversation between Manilow and Sussman at the Copacabana Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, when they discussed whether there had ever been a song called "Copacabana". After returning to the US, Manilow – who, in the 1960s, had been a regular visitor to the Copacabana nightclub in New York City – suggested that Sussman and Feldman write the lyrics to a story song for him. They did so, and Manilow supplied the music. The song's lyrics refer to the Copacabana nightclub, "the hottest spot north of Havana". Jack Feldman is an American lyricist who has written songs for television, film, and Broadway. He has worked on many Disney movies ranging from ''Oliver & Company'' to '' The Lion King II: Simba's Pride'', collaborating with Alan Menken on the songs for '' Newsies''. The Alliance Theatre is a theater company in Atlanta, Georgia, based at the Alliance Theatre, part of the Robert W. Woodruff Arts Center, and is the winner of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award. The Comedian Harmonists were an internationally famous, all-male German close harmony ensemble that performed between 1928 and 1934 as one of the most successful musical groups in Europe before World War II.
