Spessart is a '' Mittelgebirge'', a range of low wooded mountains, in the States of Bavaria and Hesse in Germany. It is bordered by the Vogelsberg, Rhön and Odenwald. The highest elevation is the Geiersberg at 586 metres above sea level. Etymology The name is derived from "Spechtshardt". ''Specht'' is the German word for woodpecker and ''Hardt'' is an outdated word meaning "hilly forest". Geography Location The Spessart is a '' Mittelgebirge'', part of the German Central Uplands, located in the Lower Franconia region of Bavaria and in Hesse, Germany. Main-Kinzig-Kreis is a Kreis (district) in the east of Hesse, Germany. Neighboring districts are Wetteraukreis, Vogelsbergkreis, Fulda, Bad Kissingen, Main-Spessart, Aschaffenburg, Offenbach and the district-free cities of Offenbach and Frankfurt. History The district was created in 1974 by merging the former districts of Hanau, Schlüchtern, Gelnhausen and the former urban district of Hanau. Bad Orb (; " Thermae on the Orb River") is a spa town in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis district of Hesse, Germany. It is situated east of Hanau between the forested hills of the Spessart. Bad Orb has a population of over 10,000. Its economy is dominated by the health and tourism sectors. Geography Location Bad Orb is located in the valley of the Orb, a tributary of the Kinzig.
