Schriftstellerverband Der DDR
Deutscher Schriftstellerverband (DSV, "German Writers' Union") was an East German association of writers. It was founded in 1950 and renamed in 1973 as Schriftstellerverband der DDR. The association considered itself an heir to the earlier traditions of the SDS (, "Protection League of German Writers") which had flourished in the 1920s but then, after 1933, been forced into line under the Hitler dictatorship and, in July 1933, found itself subsumed into the "National Association of German Writers" (''Reichsverband deutscher Schriftsteller''), a Nazi mandated successor organisation between 1933 and 1945. The DSV archives are now in the Academy of Arts Berlin. East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic (GDR; german: Deutsche Demokratische Republik, , DDR, ), was a country that existed from its creation on 7 October 1949 until its dissolution on 3 October 1990. In these years the state was a part of the Eastern Bloc in the Cold War. Hermann Kant
Hermann Kant (; 14 June 1926 – 14 August 2016) was a German writer noted for his writings during the time of East Germany. He won the Heinrich Mann Prize in 1967. He served the Stasi as an informer under the codename ''IM Martin''. Early life Hermann Kant was born on 14 June 1926 in Hamburg, Germany the son of a factory worker and a gardener born into poverty. His younger brother, Uwe Kant, became a well-known children's author. Because of the impending bombing of Hamburg during the Second World War, the family moved to Parchim in 1940, where his paternal grandfather lived as a master potter. After passing elementary school he began an electrician apprenticeship in Parchim, which he completed in 1944. On 8 December 1944 he was drafted into the German Military. He became a Polish POW, was held in Warsaw's Mokotów Prison and later was transferred to a labor camp, which was located on the site of the former Warsaw Ghetto. East or Orient is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from west and is the direction from which the Sun rises on the Earth. Rainer Kirsch
Rainer Kirsch (17 July 1934 – 4 September 2015) was a German writer and poet. Life and career Kirsch was born in Döbeln in 1934. After graduating from high school, he studied history at the Klosterschule Roßleben and philosophy at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg and the University of Jena in 1953. In 1957 he was relegated, and in 1958 he was expelled from the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). After that, he worked as a laborer in a print shop, as a chemical worker, and in agriculture. From 1960 until his death in 2015, he was a freelance writer and published his first poems. From 1963 to 1965, he studied at the German Institute for Literature in Leipzig. He was considered a representative of the Saxon School of Poetry. From 1960 to 1968, he was married to the writer Sarah Kirsch. Anna Seghers
Anna Seghers (; born ''Anna Reiling,'' 19 November 1900 – 1 June 1983), is the pseudonym of a German writer notable for exploring and depicting the moral experience of the Second World War. Born into a Jewish family and married to a Hungarian Communist, Seghers escaped Nazi-controlled territory through wartime France. She was granted a visa and gained ship's passage to Mexico, where she lived in Mexico City (1941–47). She returned to Europe after the war, living in West Berlin (1947–50), which was occupied by Allied forces. She eventually settled in the German Democratic Republic, where she worked on cultural and peace issues. She received numerous awards and in 1967 was nominated for the Nobel Prize by the GDR. She died and was buried in Berlin in 1983. She is believed to have based her pseudonym, Anna Seghers, on the surname of the Dutch painter and printmaker Hercules Pieterszoon Seghers or Segers (c. 1589 – c. 1638). Bodo Uhse
Bodo Uhse (12 March 1904 in Rastatt, Grand Duchy of Baden – 2 July 1963 in Berlin) was a German writer, journalist and political activist. He was recognised as one of the most prominent authors in East Germany. The Reichsverband deutscher Schriftsteller (sometimes mis-translated Nazi Writers Union) was founded in 1933 by the Nazism, Nazi government of the Third Reich in the process of 'germanizing' cultural institutions and purging it of foreign influences. This process was necessitated by the ''Reichskulturkammergesetz'' (National Cultural Chamber Act) of 9 September 1933. It encompassed writers of all literary genres, and was part of a larger literary hierarchy, the ''Reichsschrifttumkammer'' (Reich Writers' Chamber), founded the same year.
