School Ghost Stories
, also known as ''Haunted School'', is a 1995 Japanese horror film directed by Hideyuki Hirayama. It follows a group of schoolchildren who encounter spirits and other supernatural happenings in an abandoned wing of their elementary school. The film is the first installment in the ''School Ghost Stories'' film series, and was followed by '' School Ghost Stories 2'' in 1996. Plot At Ichogaoka School, on the day before summer vacation, a group of children accidentally break a small statue. When the school day ends, Mika Shinoda, a second-grader, encounters a bouncing football while retrieving her paint set. She follows the ball into an abandoned wing of the school, where, in the upstairs bathrooms, she is lifted into the air by an unseen force. Hideyuki Hirayama
is a Japanese film director. His theatrical debut was the film ''Maria's Stomach'' in 1990. He won the Directors Guild of Japan New Directors Award for ''The Games Teachers Play'' in 1992. In 1995, ''School Ghost Stories'' was a big hit and made into popular series. ''Begging for Love'' in 1998 got many awards as International press award (FIPRESCI) in Montreal World Film Festival, Japan Academy Prize for Director of the Year, Mainichi Film Award for Best Director etc. In 2001, Hirayama won Best Director Choice for ''Turn (film), Turn'' at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. Arachnida () is a class of joint-legged invertebrate animals (arthropods), in the subphylum Chelicerata. , also known as ''Ghosts at School'', is a Japanese series of children's novels written by . It was published by Kodansha, starting in 1990. The series is a collection of popular school ghost stories in Japan, rewritten specifically for a young demographic. A four-part film series based on the books was produced from 1995 to 1999. Additionally, it was adapted into a television series in 1994 and an anime produced by Studio Pierrot in 2000. A video game was also produced. The books were received positively in Japan upon release. The first film received a nomination for Best Screenplay at the 19th Japanese Academy Awards. Sources conflict as to whether the anime's original run was successful or not, though there is evidence of a relatively successful run. Nevertheless, it received notoriety in the succeeding years with its official English dub, which mostly replaced the original script for the series with pop culture references and dark humor.
