The Peter Schoenhofen Brewing Company was an American brewery established in 1861 by Peter Schoenhofen and Matheus Gottfried in the Lower West Side, Chicago, Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The company is notable for producing and selling the popular Edelweiss brand of American beer and the Green River (soft drink), Green River brand soft drink. History In the 1850s, Prussian immigrant Peter Schoenhofen began working in the Illinois brewing trade, first with the Mueller Brothers brewers in Lyons, Illinois, Lyons; then with Conrad Seipp Brewing Company, Conrad Seipp in Chicago, driving that brewer's single beer wagon. In 1861, he formed a partnership with Matheus Gottfried to establish a brewery at the intersection of Jefferson and Roosevelt Road, 12th Streets in Chicago. The Schoenhofen Brewery Historic District is centered on the former site of the Peter Schoenhofen Brewing Company at 18th and Canalport Avenue in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Schoenhofen Brewing Beginning in the mid-1880s, Peter Schoenhofen was among a group of brewers in Chicago who transformed production methods and utilized expanding transportation options. By 1900, there were sixty Chicago breweries that collectively produced over 100 million gallons of beer per year. The Schoenhofen brewery building survived prohibition and competition from national brands. Breweries, food factories, and stockyards dotted the Chicago area by the mid-20th century. National Brewing Company
The National Brewing Company was an American brewing company that was founded in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1885. Its Baltimore brewery was located in the city's Highlandtown neighborhood. After World War II, it grew to be the largest brewer in Baltimore history and its advertising, including one-eyed mascot "Mr. Boh" and its slogan "From the Land of Pleasant Living", became part of the folk culture of the Baltimore area. The Conrad Seipp Brewing Company was established in 1854 by German immigrant Conrad Seipp in Chicago, Illinois. The brewery is notable for its prolific use of advertising, making it one of the most successful breweries of its era. It closed in 1933. History Conrad Seipp was born in Lagen, Hessen, Germany on 28 September 1825. His early trade was that of a carpenter and joiner. During the failed German revolutions of 1848-9, Seipp was conscripted and served as a bodyguard for the Grand Duchess of Hessen.
