Schmohawk
''Shmohawk'' or ''schmohawk'' is a slang term that might have derived from '' schmo'', a slang term meaning ''fool''. The HBO television show ''Curb Your Enthusiasm'' gave the word recent notoriety. Earlier uses of the word can be found in the '' Crusader Rabbit'' animated cartoon "Crusader and the Schmohawk Indians", released in 1950 and in Saul Bellow's 1958 novel '' Henderson the Rain King''. ''Shmohawk'' or ''schmohawk'' is the word " Mohawk" with the reduplicative prefix ''shm-'' that conveys a mocking or dismissive meaning. Crusader Rabbit
''Crusader Rabbit'' is the first animated series produced specifically for television. Its main characters were Crusader Rabbit and his sidekick Ragland T. Tiger, or "Rags". The stories were four-minute-long satirical cliffhangers. The concept was test marketed in 1948, while the initial serial – ''Crusader vs. the State of Texas'' – aired on KNBH (now KNBC) in Los Angeles beginning on August 1, 1950 (not August 1, 1949 as some sources erroneously state). The program was syndicated from 1950 to 1951 for 195 episodes, then was revived in 1959 for 260 color episodes. Schmuck, or shmuck, is a pejorative term meaning one who is stupid or foolish, or an obnoxious, contemptible or detestable person. The word came into the English language from Yiddish (, ''shmok''), where it has similar pejorative meanings, but where its literal meaning is a vulgar term for a penis. Etymology The Yiddish word ''shmok'' derives from Old Polish '' smok'' "grass snake, dragon". In the German language, the word '' Schmuck'' means "jewelry, adornment". ''Henderson the Rain King'' is a 1959 novel by Saul Bellow. The book's blend of philosophical discourse and comic adventure has helped make it one of his more popular works. The novel is said to be Bellow's favorite among his books. It was ranked number 21 on Modern Library's list of the 100 Best Novels in the English language. Mohawk People
The Mohawk people ( moh, Kanienʼkehá꞉ka) are the most easterly section of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy. They are an Iroquoian-speaking Indigenous people of North America, with communities in southeastern Canada and northern New York State, primarily around Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Shm-reduplication is a form of reduplication originating in Yiddish in which the original word or its first syllable (the base) is repeated with the copy (the reduplicant) beginning with shm- (sometimes schm-), pronounced .
