Scarborough East (provincial Electoral District)
Scarborough East was a provincial electoral riding in Ontario, Canada. It was created prior to the 1963 provincial election and eliminated in 1996, when most of its territory was incorporated into the riding of Pickering—Scarborough East. Scarborough East riding was created from part of the former riding of York—Scarborough. It was in the former borough of Scarborough. Seven Members of Provincial Parliament represented the riding during its history. Liberals Ed Fulton and Mary Anne Chambers and Conservatives Margaret Birch and Steve Gilchrist were all members of cabinet in their respective times. 1981 Ontario General Election
The 1981 Ontario general election was held on March 19, 1981, to elect members of the 32nd Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, Canada. The governing Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, led by Bill Davis, was re-elected for a twelfth consecutive term in office. The PCs finally won a majority government after winning only minorities in the 1975 and 1977 elections. The Liberal Party, led by Stuart Smith, was able to maintain its standing in the Legislature, while the New Democratic Party, led by Michael Cassidy, lost a significant number of seats, allowing the Tories to win a majority. 2003 Ontario General Election
The 2003 Ontario general election was held on October 2, 2003, to elect the 103 members of the 38th Legislative Assembly (Members of Provincial Parliament, or "MPPs") of the Province of Ontario, Canada. The 1999 Ontario general election was held on June 3, 1999 to elect members of the 37th Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, Canada. The governing Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, led by Premier Mike Harris, was re-elected to a second majority government. It was the first election in which the Legislative Assembly of Ontario had a reduced number of seats. Previously, the province's riding boundaries were different from those used in federal elections. The Natural Law Party of Canada (NLPC) was the Canadian branch of the international Natural Law Party founded in 1992 by a group of educators, business leaders, and lawyers who practised Transcendental Meditation. Sam Apelbaum
Sam Apelbaum is a politician in Ontario, Canada. A lawyer and real estate agent, he was leader of the Ontario Libertarian Party from 1996 to 2011. Like many other members of the Libertarian Party, Apelbaum believes in reducing government participation in education and healthcare and widespread taxation reform, and criticized the Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris as being too statist in its policies. 1995 Ontario General Election
The 1995 Ontario general election was held on June 8, 1995, to elect members of the 36th Legislative Assembly of the province of Ontario, Canada. The writs for the election were dropped on April 28, 1995. The governing New Democratic Party, led by Premier Bob Rae, was defeated by voters, who were angry with the actions of the Rae government, such as its unpopular hiring quotas and the Social Contract legislation in 1993. These policies caused the NDP to lose much of its base in organized labour, further reducing support for the party. The 1987 Ontario general election was held on September 10, 1987, to elect members of the 34th Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The governing Ontario Liberal Party, led by Premier David Peterson, was returned to power with their first majority government in half a century, and the second-largest majority government in the province's history.
