Vernon Scannell (23 January 1922 – 16 November 2007) was a British poet and author. He was at one time a professional boxer, and wrote novels about the sport. Personal life Vernon Scannell, whose birth name was John Vernon Bain, was born in 1922 in Spilsby, Lincolnshire. The family, always poor, moved frequently, including Ballaghaderreen in Ireland, Beeston, and Eccles, before settling in Buckinghamshire. Bain spent most of his youth growing up in Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. His father had fought in the First World War, and came to make a living as a commercial photographer. Damian Scannell (born 28 April 1985) is an English former footballer who last played for Tonbridge Angels. Earlier in his career he played for Fisher Athletic, Eastleigh, Southend United, Sutton United and Dagenham & Redbridge. Scannell was educated at Oasis Academy Shirley Park, Croydon, between 1996 and 2001. Mary J. P. "Maura" Scannell (1924–2011) was a leading Irish botanist. Professional career Scannell became Assistant Keeper of the Natural History Division of the National Museum, Ireland, 1949. Her special interest was the botany of Ireland, especially in the past. She was an expert in the identification of woods and charcoals, leading her to identify the material used in all the Irish harps in the National Museum as well as from archaeological sites. The Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland called her "an inspiration to generations of botanists" for her taxonomic knowledge of seeds and fibres as well as microfungi and algae. John Scannell
John Thomas Scannell (January 27, 1872 – October 2, 1951) was an American player and coach of college football, and also a physician. He was the first head coach of the football team now known as the New Hampshire Wildcats. Biography Scannell was from Newmarket, New Hampshire, and was an 1896 graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy. He then attended Colby College in Maine, before earning his medical degree in 1902 from Baltimore Medical College. Scannell played football at Exeter, Colby and Baltimore, serving as captain on each of those teams. He was also captain of the Exeter baseball team. Billy Scannell (born 16 September 1999) is an Irish rugby union player. He plays as a hooker. Early life Born in Cork, Scannell is the younger brother of Munster players Niall and Rory and a cousin of Jack O'Sullivan. His grandfather is Donal O'Sullivan, who captained Cork to the 1956 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final. Scannell first began playing rugby for Douglas RFC, but switched to Cork Constitution at under-12 level, where his older brothers were already on the books. Tim Scannell is an American college baseball coach, currently serving as head coach of the Trinity University (Texas) baseball team since 1999. In 2016, Scannell was named the NCAA DIII National Coach of the Year after leading his Trinity Tigers to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. Richard Scannell (May 12, 1845 – January 8, 1916) was an Irish-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Concordia in Kansas (1887–1891) and as bishop of the Diocese of Omaha in Nebraska (1891–1916). David Scannell (fireboat)
The ''David Scannell'' was a steam-powered fireboat built for and operated by the San Francisco Fire Department. The city had no fireboats at the time of the disastrous 1906 San Francisco earthquake, so United States Navy fireboats had to travel there to help fight the extensive fires in the aftermath of the earthquake. San Francisco built a second ship to the same design, the ''Dennis T. Sullivan'', which was launched later in 1909. Both vessels were retired in 1954. The vessel is named after David S. Scannell, San Francisco's first Fire Chief when, in 1871, it transitioned from volunteers to paid staff.
