Scandinavian America Line
The Scandinavian America Line (''Skandinavien-Amerika-Linien'') was founded in 1898, when ''Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskap'' (DFDS) took over the steamship company Thingvalla Line. The passenger and freight service between Scandinavia and New York City was operated under the name Scandinavian America Line until 1935. Fleet One of the ships in the Scandinavian American Line was the SS ''United States''. This ship was constructed in 1903 by A. Stephen and Sons in Glasgow. She was 10,095 tons and 500.8 feet long. Her captain was Captain Wulff. The ''United States'' made her maiden voyage on March 30, 1903; she sailed from Copenhagen to Christiana (present-day Oslo), Christiansand then on to New York by June 3, 1903. The ''United States'' left from Copenhagen on her last voyage on October 25, 1934. She was damaged by a fire on September 2, 1935 at Copenhagen and was scrapped that same year in Leghorn. DFDS is a Danish international shipping and logistics company. It is the busiest shipping company of its kind in Northern Europe and one of the busiest in Europe. The company's name is an abbreviation of Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab (literally ''The United Steamship Company''). DFDS was founded in 1866, when C.F. Tietgen merged the three biggest Danish steamship companies of that day. Although DFDS has generally concentrated on freight and passenger traffic on the North Sea and to the Baltic Sea, it has also operated freight services to the US, South America, and the Mediterranean in the past. The Russian American Line was a subsidiary steamship line of the East Asiatic Company that was in business from 1900 until the time of the Russian Revolution in 1917. Swedish American Line ( sv, Svenska Amerika Linien, abbr. SAL) was a Swedish passenger shipping line. It was founded in December 1914 under the name Rederiaktiebolaget Sverige-Nordamerika and began ocean liner service from Gothenburg to New York in 1915. Norwegian America Line
The Norwegian America Line ( no, Den Norske Amerikalinje), was a shipping line, originally an operator of ocean liners and cargo ships. Founded in 1910, the company ran a regular transatlantic service between Norway and the United States, and later included a route to East Africa as well. Primarily due to competition from air travel, transatlantic passenger voyages were slowly discontinued during the years. After the Great War, the company was one of Norway’s largest shipping lines, owning a fleet that included 19 vessels, several of which were for commercial cargo transport. Captain Johan Wilhelm Hempel (July 20, 1860 – January 16, 1920) was the captain of the Peace Ship. Biography He was born on July 20, 1860, to Nielsine Agnete Christine Møller and Simon Christian Ludvig Hempel in Copenhagen, Denmark. He had a brother, Captain Christian Ludvig Hans Hempel (1862-1937). He married Ophelia Maren Abelone Christensen on May 28, 1902, in Copenhagen. He joined the Scandinavian America Line in 1880. Amerikakaj ( lit. "America Quay") is a 700 metre long quay along the west side of the Søndre Frihavn dock in Copenhagen, Denmark. The name commemorates the transatlantic passenger ships of the Scandinavian America Line which used to berth along the quay during the first half of the 20th century. Today DFDS's ferries to Oslo berth at its north end. A number of buildings along the quay date from the Freeport of Copenhagen which originally occupied the grounds. Thingvalla line was a shipping company founded by Danish financier, industrialist and philanthropist Carl Frederik Tietgen in 1879 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
