Scammell Commander
The Scammell Commander was a heavy equipment transporter manufactured by Scammell for the Royal Corps of Transport. It is a tank transporter of UK origin, developed mid 1970’s to succeed the Thornycroft Antar in UK military service. It entered service in 1984 and between 1983 and 1985, 125 were built with the Royal Corps of Transport the being the sole customer. Most were operated with the British Army of the Rhine by 7 Tank Transporter Regiment, Royal Corps of Transport, in West Germany, with only a few in the United Kingdom. They were extensively used in the Gulf War in the early 1990s. All were replaced by Oshkosh M1070s in the 2000s. King Abdulaziz Naval Base
The King Abdulaziz Naval Base (Arabic: قاعدة الملك عبد العزيز البحرية) (KANB) is a naval base in Al-Sharqiyah, Eastern Province, Saudi Arabia. It is operated by the Saudi Arabian Navy. The base is located about southeast of Jubail and only from the shores of the Persian Gulf. It is home to the Eastern Fleet and the Royal Naval Academy. Their Navy Ratings "SK" (Storekeeper) and "YN" (Yeoman) learned basic skills in this school. RSNF's Western Province counterpart is in Jeddah. It is King Faisal Naval Base (KFNB). Scammell Lorries Limited was a British manufacturer of trucks, particularly specialist and military off-highway vehicles, between 1921 and 1988. History Scammell started as a late- Victorian period wheelwright and coach-building business, G Scammell & Nephew Ltd in Spitalfields, London. George Scammell, the founder, was joined by his nephew Richard and Richard's sons Alfred and James. By the early 1900s, the firm had become financially stable, providing maintenance to customers of Foden steam wagons. Oshkosh M1070
The Oshkosh M1070 is a U.S. Army tank transporter tractor unit. In current service in A0, A1, and M1300 configurations, the M1070 is coupled to a DRS Technologies M1000 semi-trailer. The primary purpose of this combination for the U.S. Army is the transport of the M1 Abrams tank. The M1300, covered in a separate sub-section, is a U.S. Army Europe-specific derivative designed to be road legal within Europe and operates with a different trailer. The M1070 is also used to transport, deploy, and evacuate armored personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery, armored bulldozers and other heavy vehicles and equipment of all types. ''Commercial Motor'' is a weekly magazine serving the road transport industry in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1905 by Edmund Dangerfield, it is notable for having been "the first journal to be devoted exclusively to the commercial vehicle engaged in the conveyance of goods or in passenger carrying". Originally named ''The Commercial Motor'', the title was shortened to ''Commercial Motor'' for the first issue of 1966. The publication is commonly referred to as 'CM' by its readers and editorial staff. Thornycroft Antar
The Mighty Antar was a heavy-duty 6×4 tractor unit built by Thornycroft from the late 1940s onwards. For some decades it was the standard tank transporter of the British Army and was also used by other nations. It was powered by a shortened V8 land version of the V12 Meteor engine, derived from the Merlin and modified to run on diesel, known as the Rolls-Royce Meteorite. Tank Transporter
A tank transporter is a combination of a heavy tractor unit and a mating full trailer or semi-trailer (typically of the "lowboy" type), used for transporting tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles. Some also function as tank recovery vehicles, the tractors of which may be armoured for protection in combat conditions.
