West Kazakhstan Region ( kk, Батыс Қазақстан облысы, translit=Batys Qazaqstan oblysy; russian: Западно-Казахстанская область, translit=Zapadno-Kazakhstanskaya oblast) is a region of Kazakhstan. The region has a population of 656,844 as of 2019. Its administrative centre is Oral (also known as Uralsk and Ural'sk), a city of about 200,000 inhabitants. The Region was created as ''West Kazakhstan Oblast'' in Kazakh SSR of Soviet Union. Between 1962 and 1992 it was named ''Ural’sk Oblast'' and was renamed in 1993 to the old name following the independence of Kazakhstan from the Soviet Union. The Kazakhstan–Russia border (russian: Казахстанско-российская граница, kk, Қазақстан-Ресей шекарасы) is the international border between the Kazakhstan, Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russia, Russian Federation. It is the longest continuous international border in the world and the second longest by total length, after the Canada–United States border. It is in the same location as the former administrative-territorial border between the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic and the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Botkul
Botkul ( kk, Боткөл; russian: Боткуль) is a bittern salt lake in the Kazakhstan–Russia border. There is no salt mining at the lake. Its waters have a bitter, stinging taste and a strong smell of hydrogen sulfide. The authorities are exploring the potential of developing Botkul as a tourist attraction. Geography Botkul is an endorheic lake located east of the course of the Volga in the Caspian Lowland, about to the south of lake Elton. Volga Railway
The Privolzhskaya Railway (Приволжская железная дорога; "Volga Railway") is a subsidiary of the Russian Railways headquartered in Saratov. It serves the Saratov, Volgograd, and Astrakhan regions of Russia. Its three branches are headquartered in Saratov, Volgograd, and Astrakhan. The railway route length totals 4236,8 km. The network has 31 146 employees (as of 2009). A short stretch of the railway crosses the territory of Kazakhstan. It was established in 1953 by the merger of the Stalingrad Railway and Ryazan-Uralsk Railway and was recently extended to Olya, a port on the Caspian Sea. About north of Astrakhan the railway crosses the Akhtuba river on a truss bridge, which was widened in 2021 to eliminate the last single-track section between Baskunchak and Astrakhan.
