Saxxy Awards
The Saxxy Awards was an annual worldwide competition for 3D-animated films, hosted by video game developer, Valve. The first competition was held in 2011 and included 20 competition categories. In 2012, the number of categories was limited to five, and the contestants are required to use Valve's Source Filmmaker software to create their animations. Each year, winners receive an in-game melee weapon for ''Team Fortress 2'' named Saxxy designed and named after the characteSaxton Hale who was the namesake for the awards. The item resembles an Academy Award. The winner of the 2012 'Best Overall' category was flown to Valve in Bellevue, Washington for a filmmaking session with the company's very own filmmakers, which became a tradition for each of the following years' Saxxy Awards. Source Filmmaker (often abbreviated as SFM) is a 3D computer graphics software toolset published by Valve for creating animated films, utilizing the Source game engine. Source Filmmaker has been used to create many community-based animated shorts for popular Source games, including ''Team Fortress 2'', the ''Left 4 Dead'' series, and ''Half-Life 2''. Machinima, originally machinema () is the use of real-time computer graphics engines to create a cinematic production. Most often, video games are used to generate the computer animation. The word "machinima" is a portmanteau of the words ''machine'' and ''cinema''. The Spike Video Game Awards (in short VGAs, known as the VGX for the final show) was an annual award show hosted by American television network Spike from 2003 to 2013 that recognized the best computer and video games of the year.
