Sawtooth Mountains Wilderness
The Sawtooth Mountains Wilderness is a federal wilderness area of located in the Sawtooth Mountains in eastern San Diego County, California. It is located in the Colorado Desert, south of Borrego Springs, near Anza Borrego Desert State Park. This land was added to the National Wilderness Preservation System when the US Congress passed the California Desert Protection Act of 1994 (Public Law 103-433). The Bureau of Land Management is the agency in charge of the Sawtooth Mountains Wilderness. Description Wilderness topography includes ridges, valleys, and canyons that support a wide array of plant and animal life. Wildlife include raptors, such as the golden eagle and prairie falcon. The spotted bat, San Diego horned lizard, and the willow flycatcher are also found here. Vegetation consists of Sonoran Desert plants, including ocotillo, cholla cactus, and creosote bush. Willow Flycatcher
The willow flycatcher (''Empidonax traillii'') is a small insect-eating, neotropical migrant bird of the tyrant flycatcher family. There are four subspecies of the willow flycatcher currently recognized, all of which breed in North America (including three subspecies that breed in California). ''Empidonax'' flycatchers are almost impossible to tell apart in the field so biologists use their songs to distinguish between them. The binomial commemorates the Scottish zoologist Thomas Stewart Traill. Description and ecology Adults have brown-olive upperparts, darker on the wings and tail, with whitish underparts; they have an indistinct white eye ring, white wing bars and a small bill. ''Larrea tridentata'', called creosote bush and greasewood as a plant, chaparral as a medicinal herb, and ''gobernadora'' (Spanish language, Spanish for "governess") in Mexico, due to its ability to secure more water by inhibiting the growth of nearby plants. Cholla Cactus
''Cylindropuntia'' is a genus of cacti (family Cactaceae), containing species commonly known as chollas, native to northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States. They are known for their barbed spines that tenaciously attach to skin, fur, and clothing. Stands of cholla are called cholla gardens. Individuals within these colonies often exhibit the same DNA, as they were formerly tubercles of an original plant. Taxonomy ''Cylindropuntia'' was formerly treated as a subgenus of '' Opuntia'', but have now been separated based on their cylindrical stems (''Opuntia'' species have flattened stems) and the presence of papery epidermal sheaths on the spines (''Opuntia'' has no sheaths).
