Sawsan Al Sha'er
Sawsan al-Sha'er ( ar, سوسن الشاعر, born July 12, 1956) is widely regarded as Bahrain's most influential liberal intellectual. A journalist and author, she is a columnist with Al-Watan (Bahrain), Al-Watan newspaper, having joined the staff there from the pro-government Al Ayam (Bahrain), Al-Ayam. Ms. al-Sha'er is well known for her liberal opinions and has been an outspoken critic of religious "extremism". Unlike many Arab liberals, Ms. al-Sha'er has not been afraid to debate with religious clerics and criticize their opinions. This has brought her into confrontation with many of Bahrain's Islamist politicians, such as Ali Salman and Adel Mouwda. She has accused "extremists" backing suicide bombers in Iraq of trying to ‘lead Bahrain to hell’. Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa
Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa ( ar, حمد بن عيسى بن سلمان آل خليفة '; 28 January 1950) is King of Bahrain since 14 February 2002, after ruling as Emir of Bahrain from 6 March 1999. He is the son of Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the previous and first emir. The country has been ruled by the Al Khalifa dynasty since 1783. The King of the Kingdom of Bahrain ( ar, ملك مملكة البحرين) is the monarch and head of state of Bahrain. The House of Khalifa has been the ruling family since 1783. Between 1783 and 1971, the Bahraini monarch held the title of hakim, and, from 1971 until 2002, the title of emir. The Information Affairs Authority (IAA) is Bahrain's ministry of information that was formed in July 2010. The president of IAA is appointed directly by the King of Bahrain and has the rank of a minister in the Bahrain government. From July 2010 to 2012, Fawaz bin Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa was President of IAA. In 2012, he relinquished the position to take up an appointment as Minister of State for Communication, and Sameera Rajab was appointed in his place. ''Al Ray Alaam'' () was a Kuwaiti Arabic-language daily newspaper that ceased publication in 1995. History and operations The newspaper was launched by Abdulaziz Al Massaeed on 16 April 1961 as a weekly with the name of ''Al Rai Aam''. Al Masaeed was both the owner and the publisher of the newspaper that was initially published in Beirut, Lebanon. Later it was relaunched as a daily based in Kuwait. ''Alrai Alaam'' ceased publication for ten days on 26 January 1970 when it was suspended by the Kuwaiti authorities due to its harsh criticisms over the editorial of Mohamed Heikal published in the Egyptian newspaper ''Al-Ahram''.
