Sawi People
The Sawi or Sawuy are a tribal people of Western New Guinea, Indonesia. They were known to be cannibalistic headhunters as recently as the 1950s. They speak the Sawi language, which belongs to the Awyu language family. Since then, many of Sawi have converted to Christianity and the world's largest circular building made strictly from un-milled poles was constructed in 1972 as a Christian meeting place by the Sawi.Tucker (1983), p. 478 Christian missionary Don Richardson who lived among the Sawi wrote a book about the experience called ''Peace Child''. Sawi or Sawuy is a language of the Sawi people of the Trans–New Guinea phylum spoken in sago swamps in the southwestern parts of the Indonesian province of Papua (province), Papua. Of the neighboring languages, it is most closely related to the Awyu–Dumut languages, Awyu languages to the east.Voorhoeve 1971: 89-90. Sawi Language (Dardic)
Sawi, Savi, or Sauji, is an endangered Indo-Aryan language spoken in northeastern Afghanistan and north-western Pakistan. It is classified as a member of the Shina language cluster within the Dardic subgroup. It is spoken in the village of Sau, on the east bank of the Kunar River, around south of the town of Arandu, which is on the border with Pakistan's Chitral region. Sawi speakers consider themselves part of the Gawar ethnic group, which is found in half a dozen of the surrounding villages and whose language is Gawarbati. In communicating with them, the people of Sau reportedly resort to using Pashto. During the long period of unrest, the population of the village was displaced into refugee camps in Chitral and Dir, but reportedly many people have now returned to Afghanistan. Sawi ( th, สวี, ) is a district (''amphoe'') in the central part of Chumphon province, southern Thailand. Geography Neighboring districts are (from the south clockwise) Thung Tako and Lang Suan of Chumphon Province, La-un and Kra Buri of Ranong province and Mueang Chumphon of Chumphon Province. To the east is the Gulf of Thailand. History The district dates back to ''Mueang'' Sawi, on the shore of the Sawi River. On 16 April 1897 a first district office was opened in village five of ''tambon'' Na Pho. After several relocations, the present office in village four of ''tambon'' Sawi was opened on 1 October 2001.
