Saw Grass
''Cladium'' (fen-sedge, sawgrass or twig-sedge) is a genus of large sedges, with a nearly worldwide distribution in tropical and temperate regions. These are plants characterized by long, narrow (grass-like) leaves having sharp, often serrated (sawtooth-like) margins, and flowering stems 1–3 m tall bearing a much-branched inflorescence. Like many plants found in wet habitats, it has deeply buried rhizomes that can produce tall shoots with dense canopies. ''Cladium mariscus ''subsp.'' jamaicense'', or saw-grass, is common in marshes and savannas throughout the tropical Americas. One typical and well-known area of extensive saw-grass growth is the Florida Everglades; sawgrass is the plant referred to by the descriptor, "River of Grass". Like many species of the Everglades, ''C. jamaicense'' grows in extremely infertile conditions, particularly wet sites that are low in phosphorus. Sawgrass is a census-designated place (CDP) in St. Johns County, Florida, United States. The area is located in Ponte Vedra Beach. Sawgrass is home to The Players Championship (TPC), established in 1974. The tournament offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf. History Initial development was done by James Stockton Jr., son of a principal of Stockton, Whatley, Davin & Co. one of the biggest names in mortgage banking, real estate and insurance in the southeast U.S. While on safari in Africa in 1970, he envisioned another golf course resort development like Ponte Vedra in the wild landscape along the coast. After he returned to Florida, he purchased 1,600 feet of ocean frontage near property SWD had available since the 1960s. He engaged a golf course architect and an engineering firm to draw plans for a new development that eventually encompassed 1,200 acres. Sawgrass Country Club
Sawgrass Country Club is a private member owned country club in the southeastern United States, located at Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, southeast of Jacksonville. A Distinguished 5 Star Platinum Club of America and a Premier Private Country Club of Northeast Florida. The club hosted the PGA Tour's Tournament Players Championship five times, from 1977 through 1981. Golf Founded in 1974, Sawgrass Country Club expanded to 27 holes of golf in the 80's. The original 18-hole course consists of the East and West nines, designed by Ed Seay, and is now joined by the equally challenging South Course by Robert Walker, who also renovated the other nines. The club hosted the Players Championship from 1977 through 1981, where it was played on the East and West nines in mid- to late March. Sawgrass Expressway
Florida State Road 869 (SR 869) is a state road located in western and northern Broward County, acting as a de facto bypass of Fort Lauderdale as well as the northern coastal and southern parts of the county extending north from a junction of I-75 ( SR 93), I-595 ( SR 862) in Sunrise to Coral Springs where it heads eastward towards Florida's Turnpike and intersecting I-95 before terminating at Southwest 10th Avenue in Deerfield Beach. The section west of the Turnpike is known as the Sawgrass Expressway, a six-lane, limited-access, all-electronic toll road; the section east of the Turnpike is a surface street known as Southwest 10th Street. Sawgrass Lake is a lake in Brevard County, Florida, United States. It is one of the lakes that form the St. Johns River. The lake is usually accessed by boat from a ramp located on U.S. Route 192 on the west shore of the St. Johns River. The lake is located near the river's headwaters, and the size of the lake is limited by the low velocity of the river at this point. It is only in diameter with a surface area of less than 1,000 acres (4 km2). The lake is only upstream from Lake Washington, the county's largest lake.
