''Save Yourself'' is the fourth studio album by The Make-Up. It was originally released through K Records in 1999. Critical reception Justin Stranzl of ''Popmatters'' gave the album a 9 out of 10, saying, "''Save Yourself'' is the best party you've ever attended, the best kiss you've ever had, and one of the hottest albums you'll ever hear." Make-Up (American Band)
The Make-Up is an American post-punk band from Washington, D.C. formed in 1995, consisting of ex-Nation of Ulysses frontman Ian Svenonius on vocals, James Canty on guitar and organ, Steve Gamboa on drums, and Michelle Mae on bass guitar. The Make-Up were joined in late 1999 by a fifth member, Alex Minoff (of the groups Golden (band), Golden and Extra Golden), who played guitar with the group until the band's dissolution in early 2000. The Make-Up combined garage rock, soul music, soul, and a self-styled liberation theology to make a new genre they called "Gospel Yeh-Yeh". This style led to an emphasis on live performances and interaction between the band and their audience, incorporating the audience into the performances as a "fifth member", creating what one reviewer described as ""highly energetic and participatory live shows". Pat Graham (born 1970, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is an American-born photographer living in England. Graham first earned an international reputation for his photography of indie rock and punk rock musicians. His work is featured in the artwork for several notable recordings, and is also in the permanent collection at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle, WA. Recent years has brought the expansion of his oeuvre into commercial photography. Education Pat Graham holds an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from the University of Westminster in London, and is currently an MFA candidate at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (expected 2020). Previously he attended the University of Wisconsin for two years before leaving for Washington, DC to document the independent music scene thriving there and continuing his studies at the Northern Virginia Community College. Fort Knox Five is a Washington, D.C.-based musical group consisting of Steve Raskin, Jon Horvath, Rob Myers and Sid Barcelona. The musical collective releases music through their self-run label, Fort Knox Recordings. Their music style mixes elements of funk, reggae, hip hop, and electronica. Theodore Francis Leo is an American singer and musician. He is the frontman and lead guitarist of the rock group Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, and in 2013, he and Aimee Mann formed the indie rock duo The Both. Early life Born in South Bend, Indiana, Leo grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where his family was from and spent many formative years in the hardcore punk scene of New York City during the 1980s and early 1990s. He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange in 1988 and the University of Notre Dame in the fall of 1993 with a degree in English. Michelle Mae is an American musician from the state of Washington, who is known for playing in rock 'n' roll groups such as The Make-Up and Weird War. Biography Mae began playing with underground bands in Olympia, Washington in the mid-1990s, including a single recording with Witchy Poo, and a period with Kill Rock Stars artists The Frumpies before moving to Washington, D.C. to help form The Make-Up in 1995. After The Make-Up dissolved in 2000, Mae joined Weird War with some of her former Make-Up band mates. Her style is heavily funk inflected, influenced by Funkadelic's Billy "Bass" Nelson, Larry Graham, and The Slits, as well as Northwest stalwarts Dead Moon. James Canty
James Canty is a Brooklyn, New York-based multi-instrumentalist musician from Washington, D.C. Canty is currently known for playing guitar in the band Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, and guitar and keyboard with The Make-Up. Before forming The Make-Up, Canty was the drummer for Nation of Ulysses, a political punk band that existed from 1987 to 1992. "Hey Joe" is an American song from the 1960s that has become a rock standard and has been performed in many musical styles by hundreds of different artists. The lyrics tell of a man who is on the run and planning to head to Mexico after shooting his unfaithful wife. In 1962, Billy Roberts registered "Hey Joe" for copyright in the United States.
