Sault Ste Marie Walk Of Fame
The Sault Ste. Marie Walk of Fame is a series of markers located throughout downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. The Walk of Fame is a joint project between the city of Sault Ste. Marie and its Downtown Association, and honours those from the city or the Algoma District who have made outstanding contributions to the community or have made significant achievements in their chosen field(s) of work. Inductees are added on an annual basis. History The genesis of the Walk of Fame was City By-Law 2002-193, passed by the Sault Ste. Marie City Council on September 9, 2002. The by-law established a "Walk of Fame Program," to be operated by the city and the Downtown Association with the intent of honouring Sault Ste. Marie natives who have made significant contributions and outstanding achievements. Morley Torgov
Morley Torgov (born 3 December 1927) is a Canadian novelist, humorist and lawyer. He was a partner in the Toronto-based legal firm Olch, Torgov, Cohen LLP. Torgov was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He studied law in Toronto at Osgoode Hall, formally becoming a lawyer in 1954. Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario awarded him an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 1990. His 1982 novel was adapted into the 1988 film ''The Outside Chance of Maximilian Glick'', of the same name. His short story collection '' A Good Place To Come From'' was made into a TV series. The Scotties Tournament of Hearts (''french: Le Tournoi des Cœurs Scotties''; commonly referred to as the Scotties) is the annual Canadian women's curling championship, sanctioned by Curling Canada, formerly called the Canadian Curling Association. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. Doreen Hume
Doreen Hume (July 14, 1926 – July 2, 2022) was a Canadian soprano soloist who performed in North America and Europe from the 1940s through to the 1970s. Biography Born Edith Doreen Hulme in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, she was a student of John Blackburn in the Sault from 1945–53 and with George Lambert at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She was soloist from 1946 to 1953 at Grace Church on-the-Hill in Toronto. She began a long association with the CBC after winning an '' Opportunity Knocks'' award in 1948. At that time she sang in a 13-week series with the network and also sang in Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas with the CBC Light Opera Company. Joni Henson (born May 31, 1977) is a Canadian operatic soprano who was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Henson's voice has been described as "thrilling and lilting" by Paula Citron of Opera Canada who says Henson "is clearly heading for a glittering career" Henson has received very favourable reviews internationally and has been awarded top honours at several singing competitions in Europe, most notably receiving the Opera Grand Prize at the XVth Concours International de Chant de Verviers in Belgium and First Place Opera and French Melodie Awards at the Concours International de Chant de Marmande in France. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (often shortened to Soo Greyhounds) are a major junior ice hockey team in the Ontario Hockey League. The Greyhounds play home games at the GFL Memorial Gardens. The present team was founded in 1962 as a team in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association. The Greyhounds name has been used by several ice hockey teams based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, since 1919. Early years The first Greyhounds team formed in 1919, playing in the now defunct Upper-Peninsula League. The team's coach was George McNamara. He suggested the team be called the Greyhounds since, ''"a greyhound is much faster than a wolf."'' That reference was to the already established rival club, the Sudbury Wolves. John Rhodes (Canadian Politician)
John Reginald Rhodes (September 26, 1929 – September 25, 1978) was a broadcaster and politician from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1971 to 1978. He died while still in office on a trip to the Middle East in 1978. Tony Esposito
Anthony James "Tony O" Esposito (April 23, 1943 – August 10, 2021) was a Canadian-American professional ice hockey goaltender, who played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), 15 of those for the Chicago Black Hawks. He was one of the pioneers of the now popular butterfly style. Tony was the younger brother of Phil Esposito, a centre. Both brothers had notable careers and are enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Summit Series, Super Series 72, Canada–USSR Series (russian: Суперсерия СССР — Канада, Superseriya SSSR — Kanada), or Series of the Century (french: Série du siècle, Séries of the Century), was an eight-game ice hockey series between the Soviet Union and Canada, held in September 1972.
