Sassenheim
Sassenheim () is a town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality covered an area of 6.62 km² (of which 0.23 km² water) and had a population of 14,906 in 2005. Since 1 January 2006, it is part of the Teylingen municipality. In 2020, the population reached 15,755. The name ''Sassenheim'' consists of two parts; the first (''Sassen'') means Saxons, and the second portion (''heim'') is Old Frankish for "home". History The name Sassenheim is mentioned in documents for the first time in 870 as ''Hostsagnem'' ('East Sassenheim') and ''Westsagnem'' ('West Sassenheim'). Later, in the 10th century, the name Saxnem, Zassenem or Sassem was used. It was formed between the towns of Leiden and Lisse on the eastern edge of the old coastal beach ridges where the main road from Leiden to Haarlem was located. Teylingen
Teylingen () is a municipality in the Western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. It was created on 1 January 2006, through the amalgamation of Sassenheim, Voorhout and Warmond. It is named after Teylingen Castle, located in Voorhout. In 2019, it had a population of 37,061. The municipality is bordered by Noordwijkerhout and Lisse to the north, Haarlemmermeer and Alkemade to the east, Leiderdorp and Leiden to the south, Oegstgeest and Katwijk to the west. It is located in an area called the "Dune and Bulb Region" (Duin- en Bollenstreek). The Kagerplassen are to the east of Sassenheim. Duin- En Bollenstreek
The Duin- en Bollenstreek (; Dutch for "Dune and Bulb Region") is a region in the Western Netherlands, that features coastal dunes and the cultivation of flower bulbs. Situated at the heart of historical Holland nearby the city of Leiden, South Holland, it is bordered by The Hague to the west and Haarlem to the north. The combination of beaches, flower fields, lakes and history makes this area attractive to tourists. Composition and name The Dune and Bulb Region stretches from the area around the lower reaches of the Old Rhine west of Leiden to just south of Haarlem. Since it is not a municipality or administrative region, the region's borders are not clearly defined. Teylingen Castle
Teylingen Castle (Dutch: ''Slot Teylingen'') is a Dutch castle in the municipality of Teylingen, in the town of Voorhout, near the border with Sassenheim. It is presumably the family keep of the noble family , from which the Van Brederode family directly descended. History The castle was originally built to protect the north-south route in Hollandic territory. Later it became a forester's castle for the forestry of the counts of Holland, starting with William IV, count of Holland. One of the best known inhabitants of the castle was Jacoba of Bavaria, who died there. At the time of her death she was married to her fourth husband Frank van Borssele. The drinking cups dug up in the surrounding area are called ''Jacobakanntjes''. Hubertus Balthazar "Bart" Zoet (20 October 1942 – 13 May 1992) was a Dutch cyclist who was active between 1961 and 1969. He competed at the 1964 Summer Olympics and won the gold medal in the 100 km team time trial, alongside Gerben Karstens, Evert Dolman, and Jan Pieterse Johannes ("Jan") Aloysius Maria Pieterse (born 29 October 1942) is a former professional racing cyclist from the Netherlands, who won the gold medal in the Men's 100 km Team Trial at the 1964 Summer Olympics, alongside Bart Zoet, Evert Do ...; he finished 20th in the individual road race. Martinus Anthonius Johannes Maria "Martin" Hersman (born 26 February 1974) is a retired speed skater from the Netherlands who was active between 1992 and 2003. Lisse () is a town and municipality in the province of South Holland in the Western Netherlands. The municipality, which lies within the Duin- en Bollenstreek, covers an area of of which is water. Its population was in . Located within the municipal boundary is also the community De Engel. History Early history The history of Lisse is closely related and similar to the neighboring towns of Hillegom and Sassenheim. Patty Trossèl (born 1963, in Sassenheim, Netherlands) is a Dutch singer and composer who performs under the name "La Pat." She sang a unique mix of cabaret, big band, vaudeville, pre-war styled chansons as well as extraordinary stage outfits. Education and career Trossèl's musical career started at age 18 with the new wave band To Lips, in which she sang and played keyboards. A few years later she left the band and entered the School of Performing Arts in Amsterdam. In 1986 she started the band La Pat as a school project. Jacob Louis Veldhuyzen van Zanten (5 February 1927 – 27 March 1977) was a Dutch aircraft captain and flight instructor. He was captain of the KLM Flight 4805 and died in the Tenerife airport disaster, the deadliest accident in aviation history. He was KLM's chief instructor and commonly appeared on advertising. A44 Motorway (Netherlands)
The A44 motorway is a motorway in the Netherlands connecting the A4 with Wassenaar. The route continues as main road N44 towards The Hague, providing an alternative link with Amsterdam for the A4 motorway. The A44 also serves Leiden and the Bollenstreek. The length of the A44 is , the N44 adds another making the total route long. Overview Near Leimuiden, the A44 motorway splits from the A4 at Burgerveen interchange. Until the 1960s, the A4 followed the route of the current A44 passing Leiden west. Then the new A4 was built east of the city creating a more direct route from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. Jacoba Of Bavaria
Jacqueline ( nl, Jacoba; french: Jacqueline; german: Jakobäa; 15 July 1401 – 8 October 1436), of the House of Wittelsbach, was a noblewoman who ruled the counties of Holland, Zeeland and Hainaut in the Low Countries from 1417 to 1433. She was also Dauphine of France for a short time between 1415 and 1417 and Duchess of Gloucester in the 1420s, if her marriage to Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, is accepted as valid. Jacqueline was born in Le Quesnoy and from her birth she was referred to as "of Holland", indicating that she was the heiress of her father's estates.
