Sasha Wortzel
Sasha Wortzel is an artist, filmmaker, educator, and activist, based in New York City. She is the writer, director, and producer of ''Happy Birthday, Marsha!'' with Tourmaline. She and Tourmaline raised over $25,000 on Kickstarter to fund the film. Wortzel co-created the documentary ''We Came to Sweat: The Legend of Starlite''. The film concerns the community efforts to stop the eviction of the Starlite Lounge, the oldest black gay bar in Brooklyn. It was a highlight of the 2014 New York Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Film Festival. Wortzel's interactive artwork ''42 Butter Lane'' (2011) was included in the 2014 exhibition ''Roaming House'' at A.I.R. Gallery. Happy Birthday, Marsha!
''Happy Birthday, Marsha!'' is a fictional short film that imagines the gay and transgender rights pioneers Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera in the hours that led up to the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. The film stars Mya Taylor as Johnson. It was written, directed, and produced by Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel. The filmmakers raised over $25,000 on Kickstarter to fund the film. The film is a sponsored project of Women Make Movies. The film premiered in Los Angeles in March 2018. The film also showed at the 2018 BFI London Flare LGBTQ+ Film Festival. The film received some press after Tourmaline accused David France of using some of her labor in his own film, '' The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson'', on Johnson's life, which France denied. Tourmaline (activist)
Tourmaline (born 1983; formerly known as Reina Gossett) is an American artist, filmmaker, activist, editor, and writer. She is a transgender woman who identifies as queer. Tourmaline is most notable for her work in transgender activism and economic justice, through her work with the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, Critical Resistance and Queers for Economic Justice. In 2017, she edited the book ''Trap Door: Trans Cultural Production and the Politics of Visibility,'' with co-editors Eric A. Stanley and Johanna Burton. The book is part of a series called ''Critical Anthologies in Art and Culture'' by MIT Press. Tourmaline served as the 2016–2018 Activist-in-Residence at Barnard Center for Research on Women. Mira Schor
Mira Schor (born June 1, 1950) is an American artist, writer, editor, and educator, known for her contributions to art criticism, critical discourse on the status of painting in contemporary art and culture as well as to feminist art movement, feminist art history and criticism. Early life and education Mira Schor's parents Ilya Schor, Ilya and Resia Schor were Poles, Polish-born artists who came to the US in 1941. Mira Schor and her older sister Naomi Schor (1943–2001), a noted scholar of French literature, French Literature and Feminist theory, were both educated at the Lycée français de New York, Lycée Français de New York. After receiving her Baccalauréat in 1967, Mira Schor studied art history at New York University (WSC Bachelor of Arts, B.A. 1970). Womanhouse
''Womanhouse'' (January 30 – February 28, 1972) was a feminist art installation and performance space organized by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro, co-founders of the California Institute of the Arts ( CalArts) Feminist Art Program and was the first public exhibition of Art centered upon female empowerment. Chicago, Schapiro, their students, and women artists from the local community, including Faith Wilding, participated.Revisiting Womanhouse Chicago and Schapiro encouraged their students to use consciousness-raising techniques to generate the content of the exhibition.Recalling Womanhouse Together, the students and professors worked to build an environment where women's conventional social roles could be shown, exaggerated, and subverted.
