Cormorant (horse)
Cormorant (April 21, 1974 - May 4, 2007) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and the winner of the 1977 Jersey Derby . Racing career Cormorant was purchased for $16,000 and was named after the owner's wife's sailboard. He debuted on June 22, 1976. He had a strong 1976, winning 4 out of 5 races including the October 16, 1976 Nursery Stakes. His winning ways continued into the 1977 season, where he won the Iroquois Handicap and the Grade-3 Bay Shore Stakes in March. He then won the April 9th, 1977, Grade-2 Gotham Stakes. His 7 race winstreak was snapped after a 2nd-place finish at the May 14th, 1977 Grade-2 Withers Stakes. On May 21, 1977, he entered the 1977 Preakness Stakes. He finished in 4th place behind Seattle Slew, Iron Constitution and Run Dusty Run as the 2nd favorite at 4:1 odds. Ribot (horse)
Ribot (27 February 1952 – 28 April 1972) was a Great Britain, British-bred, Italy, Italian-trained Thoroughbred racehorse who won all his 16 races, including the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Arc de Triomphe twice. He raced from 5 furlongs (1,000m) to 1m 7f (3,000m) in three countries on all types of track conditions. He is considered by many experts to be one of the best horses ever. He was the best Italian two-year-old of 1954, when his three wins included the Gran Criterium. He won his first four races of 1955 in Italy before being sent to France where he won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. In the following year he was even better, recording wide-margin victories in both the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. The Breeders' Cup Distaff is a Weight for Age Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares, 3 years old and up. Known as the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic between 2008 and 2012, it is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships. Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974. Alabama Stakes
The Alabama Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race open to three-year-old fillies. Inaugurated in 1872, the Grade I race is run over a distance of one and one-quarter miles on the dirt track at Saratoga Race Course. Held in mid August, it currently offers a purse of $600,000. In 2010 it became the third leg of the American Triple Tiara of Thoroughbred Racing, after the Acorn Stakes and Coaching Club American Oaks. The Alabama Stakes is named in honor of William Cottrell of Mobile, Alabama. "Alabama" was the name settled on because Cottrell was too modest to have a race named for him personally.
