Sarah Sharkey
Rear Admiral Sarah Edith Sharkey is an Australian physician, medical administrator, and a senior officer in the Royal Australian Navy. She has been Commander Joint Health and Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force since 2 December 2019. While holding the rank of captain, Sharkey was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC) in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours for "outstanding achievement as the Director of Clinical Governance and Projects and Australian Defence Force Health Services Project Transition Lead". The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is the principal naval force of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The professional head of the RAN is Chief of Navy (CN) Vice Admiral Mark Hammond AM, RAN. CN is also jointly responsible to the Minister of Defence (MINDEF) and the Chief of Defence Force (CDF). The Department of Defence as part of the Australian Public Service administers the ADF. Women currently make up 19.2% of the ADF workforce. Women have served in Australian armed forces since 1899. Until World War II women were restricted to the Australian Army Nursing Service. This role expanded in 1941–42 when the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Australian Army and Royal Australian Air Force established female branches in which women took on a range of support roles. While these organisations were disbanded at the end of the war, they were reestablished in 1950 as part of the military's permanent structure. Women were integrated into the services during the late 1970s and early 1980s, but were not allowed to apply for combat roles. Air Vice Marshal Tracy Lee Smart, is an Australian physician, medical administrator, and a retired senior officer in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). She served as Commander of Joint Health Command and Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force from December 2015 to December 2019. Joint Health Command (Australia)
